New Deutsche Bahn Inter City stock

due for introduction towards the end of 2011. These are apparently completely new trains. However, form the description in the DB onboard magazine, they don't sound too great:

1. Maximum speed 160km/h, current ICs have a maximum speed of 200 km/h
2. no mention of catering
3. existing double deck stock has poor luggage capacity, not ideal for long distance services
4. only part of existing double deck stock with level access (for wheelchairs) is driving trailer

on the plus side, they will be loco hauled

cheers for that, still no mention of catering, the number of cycle spaces is significantly less than the existing IC trains and the upstairs blinds on the existing double deck stock is useless

There's a similar write up on Bombardier's web site with no mention of catering - unless the 'multi-purpose area' could accommodate a trolley or similar.

Isn't that area for the team of on-board engineers required to fix the train whenever it breaks down, or is it only UK stock that suffers such regular problems?!

DB trains are renowned for failing, mine yesterday from Frankfurt to Heidelberg had to have it's loco replaced. I've also been on an ICE3 which failed twice (and had to be rebooted). Mind, DB usually have spare sets in case of failures and are not renowned for dodgy OHLE

The double decker stock used by metronom on the regional services between Bremen and Hamburg is (I think) the same as the 4th generation stock used by DB Regio.

The DB Regio services Westfalen-Express RE6 and Porta-Express RE78 that I regularly use, have the newer (4th gen) double decker stock, which is very comfortable and overall pleasant to travel on.

However I have travelled on the Rhein-Münsterland - Express RE7 which uses the older double deck stock, and they do seem quite ancient compared to the newer versions!

They have vending machines on the newer DB Regio versions, a trolley wouldn't be suitable, negotiating the steps between the levels.

On the plus side, I think it will help relieve some of the overcrowding, that I have seen on the busier IC routes. The IC I have used between Bremen and Osnabrück gets very busy indeed.
