Looks like no discounts for Senior Railcard holders (unlike the Lancs/Cheshire Day Rangers).
I suppose it could be said they are sufficiently discounted already.
The 0930 start is also later than the Lancs/Cheshire which are 0845.
Not many realistic options Chester/Ellesmere Port-Warrington-Manchester yet, until the Chester-Victoria-Calder Valley-Leeds start in ?December.

I seem to recall being asked to take surveys after buying Johnston Press £10 tickets in the past so perhaps the market research has shown that there's a body of early retired people who find this kind of deal attractive.

While it's galling that the rail industry yet again takes 30-55 year olds for granted, I can see that opening it to all comers might create some unattractive business in terms of stag and hen parties and groups of sports fans travelling together. By definition, most of my age group's leisure travel (I'm 46) is done either at weekends or when on annual leave, in many cases using the same season ticket as for work.

On Northern's website it says:
"Tickets are available to buy now and you can purchase these from ticket offices and on board our trains. Tickets will soon be available to buy on our website and via Ticket Vending Machines."

Does this mean that Northern are finally going to put rovers and rangers on their TVMs? Let's hope so and I hope that "soon" really is soon.

Mind you, the accompanying map for this new rover seems to be from some distant future fantasy land with Colne-Skipton, Buxton-Matlock and Woodhead all reopened for passenger traffic...

Looking again at Northern's map for the new rover, it really is shocking-

- it suggests that the rover can be used on Merseyrail's Northern line
- Carlisle isn't labelled and is a minor station
- Todmorden missing
- something funny is going on with Edale and Hope
- Morecambe doesn't even get a small circle, never mind a big one
- Ravenglass is now a major interchange
- lines going beyond Colne, Buxton, Hatfield, Glossop

and I'm sure that there must be other mistakes.

The map on railrover.org is much better.

It seems to show all lines for the area, even if no Northern services run on those lines. Carlisle to Oxenholme and Warrington Bank Quay to Crewe are also included.
Northern have a map on their website that shows where their own services run, so you'd think they'd have used a version of that.
