New Car Pool - Poll For 5th April Trip.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to give you all a poll to see where the next trip for me to plan in spring should go to.

Looking at the 5th of April as the date.

I've included some places that just aren't possible by train in a day but are in a car.

This is the car I'll be using

Origin of the trip would be from Essex and London.

Bellow are the options I have come up with, if you have any more suggestions please let me know!

I expect only having to stop off at two or three points max on each trip, so don't panic that it would take an age to get there.

The car will have six spare seats up for grabs if you want to bring your friends/group along.


Ffestiniog Railway - Possible pick ups - Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, Waltham Abbey, Watford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Telford and Shrewsbury.


Welsh Highland Railway - Possible pick ups - Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, Waltham Abbey, Watford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Telford and Shrewsbury.


North Yorkshire Moors Railway Possible pick up points - Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, Gants Hill, A406 (North) London, Brent Cross, Watford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Rugby, Leicester, Sandiacre for Nottingham and Derby, Doncaster and York.


Mid-Hants Railway (Watercress Line) - Possible pick up points - Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, A406 North OR Central London, Staines, Camberley and Farnborough.


Swanage Railway - Possible pick up points - Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, Gants Hill, A406 North OR Central London, Staines, Camberley, Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton, Bournemouth and Poole.


West Somerset Railway - Possible pick up points - Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, Gants Hill, A406 North OR Central London, Slough, Maidenhead, Reading, Swindon, Bristol, Weston-Super-Mare and Bridgwater.


Great Central Railway - Possible pick up points - Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, Gants Hill, A406 (North) London, Brent Cross, Watford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Rugby, and Leicester.


Crich Tramway - Possible pick up points - Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, Gants Hill, A406 (North) London, Brent Cross, Watford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Rugby, Leicester and Sandiacre for Nottingham and Derby.

I've just amended the OP to show the destinations for you

Out of that lot I like the sound of the Welsh Highland Railway the best, as it is a pain in the rear to do by train, even from relatively locally (Herefordshire). I certainly can't do it by bus and train in a day, would need at least two days to do it all.

Crich Tramway and the Ffestiniog also look good as I consider the options over a bowl of cereal Will see what we all end up choosing!

NLC1072 I think you need to specify where you are willing to pick up from as for quite a few of those a diversion via Herefordshire would be fairly substantial.

Imagine a trip to the Watercress Line from London via Herefordshire!!!

Very much so, of course this would only be fair if heading to the Welsh Highland/Ffestiniog! I'd not only be willing to provide fuel money shares but a coffee or something as a thank you for making the effort!

Surely going to Wales would easily be a 10+hr round trip? Rather alot in one day.

For me it is roughly that, but for people joining from London probably 4 hours 15 minutes or less each way. But anybody joining can sleep on the way and on the way back, I on the other hand can pace myself and take things easy (I'm an insomniac anyway because of my shift work!)

I must say as someone who fairly regularly makes the trip from Surrey to Aberdyfi (Southern Snowdonia) that sounds very tough. If you are up for that, kudos, but it takes us (with a couple of breaks) about six hours, and for me at least doing that twice would ruin any enjoyment on the railway.

Your a hardier man than I is all I can say.

I must say as someone who fairly regularly makes the trip from Surrey to Aberdyfi (Southern Snowdonia) that sounds very tough. If you are up for that, kudos, but it takes us (with a couple of breaks) about six hours, and for me at least doing that twice would ruin any enjoyment on the railway.

Your a hardier man than I is all I can say.

I drive Essex to Waterford Ireland in one go only stopping for the ferry at Pembroke, although its a long way I just flip the cruise control on and that's almost it!
