New Briefcase - Recommendations?

Can anyone recommend me a good briefcase / carry case for taking to work?

I've been looking at Samsonite cases on Amazon but some of them do seem a little steep.

I will probably be taking it with me on train services between London and Newcastle, and on the tube down to Central London over the July/August period.

I don't have particuarly large spacing requirements, I just need room to store documents, the Blackberry, maybe a folder etc..

It should be suitable for the trains.

Any thoughts?

Have you thought about using a rucksack? More secure and comfortable to use than a briefcase in my experience

Aesthetically, I just don't like rucksacks. I was in town having a look the other day but they're all too big - more for going to school than going to work.

Personally I normally like to carry my stuff in a cabin-case (For easy organisation) that is in turn carried in a rucksack (For hands-free convenience). As a combination it certainly seems to take everything that I, the baggage handlers at Heathrow and Gatwick, Greyhound Buses, and eight-hour standing trips along the WCML can throw at it!

I don't really use briefcases myself, so I can't make any informed recommendations alas. If it's only for occasional use then you might be alright with a cheaper cardboard one from Argos which'll do the job, though won't add anything to visual presence if ye are attending meetings etc.

On the other hand; If ye are looking for a long-term investment, I would suggest looking at the "wideboy" style briefcases that many commercial Guards can be seen using around the country. They're normally well built, have lots of space in them (Big enough to accommodate a portable APTIS machine, a chip+PIN terminal, a couple of spare batteries and a Guards manual at any rate! ) and though they might be bigger than the uses ye mention above, they'll come in handy in the future if ever ye find thyself needing to carry both piles of documents and a laptop computer at the same time. In any case, their frequent use by Guards proves that they're definitely trainproof!

I have two briefcases. One started life as a laptop bag, but wasn't strong enough, so now only carries a few papers. The other is a proper briefcase, but still isn't strong enough, because it's the type where the handle is attached to the lid (the strap snapped two years ago) so all the weight is on the clasp, which looks ready to break any moment. If you have to carry significant weight, get a legal-style one with at least two straps and handles attached to the sides. Also, work out how to thread an umbrella through it and wear a pork pie hat for the classic Rumpole impression.

Not quite what you ask for but for school I use a gym bag, they are perfect for what I use it for. I'm able to get my books, textbooks, laptop, rugby kit AND pe kit in all at once. They are flexible and spacious and travel really well. That's what I recommend

Depends on what you are able to pay and what you need. High price or fancy brand names does not always mean the most durable product. A cheapish case that lasts 5 years might be better value than an expensive one that only lasts for 10 to 15 years.

A google search showed some others at well over £100. Some market stalls also sell assorted "luggage", so they might be worth browsing if you have a nearby market.

At the moment I'm using a Travelpro Executive First Rolling for stays of three nights or less and this has travelled some miles without fail. I usually use this when I don't have a base to store my clothes during the stay. Very formal and fits most airlines and all Intercity first class "hide aways".

I also have a Karabar 55x38x20 as my weapon of choice. I have also got a standard laptop bag with a pass-thru pocket on the back as I can go office to office without carrying the Karabar. Very durable and fits nicely in First Class services.

Finally I have a techair 3704 which is a laptop rucksack and this is my normal office bag and for rough field work where I don't need a formal look. This is still a very smart bag for the office and will do for 8/10 day trips/meetings.
