The government has formally announced a new through Bradford station

Passengers across Yorkshire are set to benefit from major station improvements, as the government has today (20 October 2026) confirmed a new station at Bradford Interchange.

Bradford’s connections with some of the North’s largest cities, including Leeds, Manchester and York, will be transformed as passengers will be able to benefit from more frequent trains, improved journey times and reliability.

The Bradford Interchange site unlocks the potential to regenerate Bradford’s Southern Gateway, and in tandem with the proposed West Yorkshire Mass Transit, would support thousands of new homes, jobs and up to £1 billion in economic benefits.

I haven't seen any further details announced yet, but expect that to follow shortly.

I don't know if this the existing Bradford council plan or something different.

Simply because it's what previous aspirations and plans wanted. If you don't change it to a through station, I am not sure any cost benefit analysis would stand up.
The BBC article says that no decision has yet been made on whether it will be through or retain the same layout.

The logical choice is to keep the layout the same and almost certainly the better BCR. Unless you like your stations a lot further from the city centre and relgating Bradford to a place to stop on the way to Leeds

This is not a through station its an upgrade to Interchange and could eventually close Forster Square if the Leeds connection is quicker.

1) Are we sure this will not be a through station? It is difficult to see what the benefit will be if it is not a through station.
2) I can't see how Forster Square would close as where would Skipton/Ilkley - Bradford services go?

Lots of talk of more frequent services but Leeds can't take many more arrivals on the West side and without significant investment in the Calder Valley route how are they getting more trains to Manchester?
