Good Afternoon all,

I will brace myself for the replies! But all comments welcome. I am 42 currently a production manager worked my way up pretty much became skilled at everything I could. But I feel I need a fresh start and still feel I am an exceptional worker and can turn to anything goals and target driven who wants to see the job through the most productive but also to the standard required.

So my question is can I pursue a career in the Train industry underground or overground. Where can I or should I start? Or am I deluded and it’s just a pipe dream?

I don’t have to leave my job it’s good pays well. So for me I know it will be hard work making this change but I have a great work ethic…..ex military to working with the elderly to running a print production floor with 70 people and over £10 million worth of equipment. Is it stick with the devil I know????

Appreciate you taking the time to read and/or reply.

Simple answers are you can definitely apply, lots over 40 do and have been successful.

The way to go about it is sign up for job alerts on the train operating company websites that are close to you and also check here often as new jobs are posted by members.

Lastly, you don’t have to sell yourself to us :p:lol:

Its illegal to discriminate based on age these days. Your biggest hurdle will be the reduced pay you'll get whilst training.

Ha ha I was just trying to give you guys the right vibe…. of course I am driven by a career and a good salary. But I also am not a drone looking for a short cut I will earn it on merit! Just needed to know it was possible and help on the right path.

I am going to bring this thread to a close because it is very generalised. @NewbieTrain don't forget we are not employers so you don't need to give us the spiel about why you are qualified for a job!

That being said please read here for guidance and where to apply - https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/read-before-posting-jobs-careers-forum-guidelines.219781/

You cannot be discriminated on at age and they won't ask that anyway (maybe only age range but that is for background reporting process anyway). Start looking at where is local to you (e.g. Thameslink, LNER, Great Northern and other London-based TOCs or TfL within range) and check their websites. Read the wealth of posts here on the forums for careers such as signalling, driving, engineering, train crew, stations and much more. If you have more specific questions about a particular vacancy then of course feel free to come back with a new post. Tailor your CV as required.

Good luck in your search.
