New 378 Delivery

Went on a 378 on the North London line last Monday and can safely say that they have the smooth ride you would expect from an Electrostar

The AirCon was not brillant, but it was not the worst I have had on a train. The worst for me was on a TGV from Paris to Marseille.

Better than an air con train when the air con is broke. Try a class 166 and compare to 165.

Think the 378s are a much nicer train to be in compared to its cousins (375-377) with its open plan gangways and long ways seating. Went on 378007 few months back and was pretty cool compared to outside to its not the worst aircon ive had.

Sorry but i have to disagree here...TFL say the wide gangways make the train feel much safer than the current 313s...well, i was mugged a few weeks ago on my way home and since then ive become more wary when im out and about of the people around me:roll: now if i was the only one on a late night Overground service and there was a group/bunch of chavs or drunks down one end of the train and they start on someone, said someone cant do much becasue they are in one long tube of a train, apart from say get off at a station and or contact the driver or guard... Whereas in a 313, if something like that happend said person could move to another coach and if needs be, block the internal door between coaches...

Also...the standard of seats on modern trains do seem to be getting harder nowadays, and i dont actually like the idea of what is basically Underground style seating in a mainline type train...And again the complete latitudenal style seating isnt the best layouts ive seen in recent years...

As for the Air cons...Another thing i find dissapointing about modern rolling stock...The Desiros can freeze you sometimes, the Voyagers air conditioning system is just rubbish...Junipers can be ok when they are settled, had a desiro last summer from waterloo to twickenham that was actually blowing DUST out ! And the Electrostars air condition...well, ive always found anything built by Bombardier to be of low quality...so yes, that included the Electrostar...

Ironicly though, there is one DMU that i belive would be perfect over here...that does technically operate in the uk...and that is the

NIR C3K / 3000 Class

First up I'm sorry to hear you got mugged. I don't want to imagine how terrifying that was for you. Sadly there have been any number of occasions when youths intent on mugging someone have steamed a train with connecting doors looking for a victim. Most of the time other passengers have been on board and often witnessed the attack. On one hand the 378 gives them a clear view up the train but it also gives you the same opportunity and perhaps a chance to make an emergency call. It also means someone in the last carriage can see an incident in the first and hopefully alert the police and driver.

Sorry to hear you got mugged. Really anything can happen on any train desiros are just as easy to walk through with electric doors. As for aircon on desiros, i dont really notice as i work on them all the time the cab air con is usually pretty good so cant really comment on the passenger compartment air cons.

Must agree, On my limited travelling experience on Bombardier products the air con has been non existent.

On the contrary - 377s work fine in my experience, and I've done a hell of a lot of travel on them. On the 170s unfortunately I cannot comment.

I travel (or used to when they were more common in Notts) on 170s a lot and they are excellent! I love them.

I believe they are doing test runs on the Brighton line at the moment - presumably mileage accumulation.

With regards AirCon, some of the 377s aren't too bad, but I've been on some which are pretty unpleasant, and my limited 170 mileage suggests a similar story here - although that mileage is almost entirely on the then SWT units.

Well the delivery of the 378/1s for the ELL are now taking precedent over the 378/0s. Plus they still have to sort out the DOO issues with the 378s on the Watford DC lines.

So early/mid next year seems a fair guess

Preferably the 313's will last longer as they are better to travel on than 378's on the bit of the North London line I travel regular. They desperately need to increase service frequency throughout the day as sitting is never an option.

I expect the 313's will disappear when the NLL is closed for 4 months from January and the service will return with just 378's. Looking forward to the ELL next May - does anyone know if it opens same time as NLL is put back between Gospel Oak and Stratford

Have to say travel on Southern's 377's and LOROL's 378's regularily and the air con seems fine to me - probably because I travel in overcrowded trains that need a lot of cooling down

Thanks Champsracing and Electrostar...fortunatly im pretty much over that now but as said ive now unfortunatly become rather warey weather i go or travel...

Either way though...ill admit, it didnt happen on railway grounds...far from it...was on my way back from the london irish v london wasps match later sep/early oct and said unfortunate incident happend on the way home...makes me wish id stayed back at the madjeski for one more pint of guinness...then taken the cross country home....that way i might not have ended up getting mugged in the first place...guess the only lucky thing is that i got away with everything but a london irish flag...bruse to my chin and slight black eye and a sore neck...

Its ironic actually, the best air con id say ive ever come across is on the CAF built units, and some MK3 sets...the worst...SWTs Junipers - which when the work there fine, whey there not working properley they blow dust at you...Desiros which freeze you to death, even on the 0105 in autumn & winter...And finally all Bombardier products...to put it bluntly, there as good as a asthmatic breathing through a straw...

I remember catching an Adelante unit from Paddington to go to Wales (I think) about six years ago.It was winter and the train was freezing and the aircon was blowing out cold air.Everyone in the train was wearing coats throughout the journey.

Does anyone know how well the 378s are bedding down on the NLL? This morning a door failure led to long delays with said unit left in a siding with doors wide open trackside. To be fair everyone who'd been forced off the service managed to fit on the following train thanks to the wide aisles and seating arrangements. Piling on a crowded 378 is a much easier experience than the old Silverlink units.

Well I've now seen 011 and 012 in passenger service. Hopefully more will soon so there are less 313s about.

Was fortunate enough to catch 009 yesterday, which I think is the latest to enter passenger service, meaning 005, 007-18 are now in passenger service I think I'm right in saying.

Question that's bugged me about the 378s. Does anyone know why the pantograph on the 378s always makes a massive banging noise, as if it keeps hitting something? The number of times I've been on one and there's been a massive bong and people have jumped!
