I was reading EMUs & Light Rail Systems 2011 by Peter Fox & Robert Pritchard and I noticed soemthing odd. Class 465s are listed as having 4x 280KW motors (per motor coach?) while Class 365s are listed as having 4x 157KW motors (per motor coach?). This implies that a 465 has almost twice the power of a 365. Is this true? I looked on wikipedia, which agreed with this but in some of the article but stated the total output of a class 465 as 1199KW and the total output of a class 365 as 1256KW. Which one of these values is correct, which one of these is more powerful and are either of these classes more powerful than a desiro (2000KW all up).

Thanks in advance =)

Different number of traction motors.

465 has 4 traction motors at 280 KW each making 1,120 KW total, 8.23 KW/Tonne.

365 has 8 traction motors at 157 KW each making 1,256 KW total 8.28 KW/Tonne.

A Desiro needs more power because it weighs more - thats progress for you. For example a 350/450 weighs 170 Tonnesand has 11.76 KW/Tonne assuming 2,000 KW is correct but strangely I cannot find any power figures for Siemens products (are they hiding something ?).

This suggests both types have roughly the same rated power output of around 1200 Kw with 8 motors (4 per power car). 465s won't perform as well as they use 3rd rail obviously.

Class 350/360s have around 1500kW available.
Class 375/377 have 6 * 250 kw motors giving 1500 kw total.

Class 376 is a 5 car unit and 8 * 200 Kw motors. 1600 kw but one coach extra.

Class 379 is a 4 car unit with 6 * 200 kw - 1200 kw.

Trains have got heavier because of greater crashworthiness and passenger comfort.

Mindyou, Electrostars and Desiros aren't really that much heavier than the mrk3 EMUs- it's just when you compare against the Networkers that they come out as lardy. Worse with the mrk3s is that the weight is very concentrated in the motor coach. The post privatisation EMUs use lightweight construction in the same way as Networkers, but add aircon etc.
