I noticed this coach at Barrow Hill on Saturday during the 56 tour.

Is this a networker coach?

It does look like a BREL Networker but it's missing the air intake vents. Odd ...

I'll ask around tomorrow - one of my colleagues mentioned it when we went to Rail Ale last year.

Oh okay, had heard that a few coaches from that hadn’t been scrapped but I’m probably wrong.

It looks like a spare bodyshell to me. If so it’s slightly curious it was never used to replace the damaged vehicle from 365526.

One driving car of 365526 remains unaccounted for, last seen at Wolverton. There doesn’t seem to be any record of its disposal, so it may well still exist. However it isn’t this.

Wasn't more than one vehicle damaged beyond repair at Potters Bar? If so, using the spare wouldn't really be an option.

I’ve heard mixed on this. Clearly one of the four was severely damaged, but it’s never been fully clear how much damage the third car in the formation suffered. It did derail IIRC, and it presumably suffered some damage when the coupling broke.

The other factor with 365526 was of course the 16x Connex units which happened to come over to WAGN soon after. It was presumably fairly easy to simply plan on the basis of a 40-unit fleet rather than 41, though I dare say with the fleet getting utterly hammered over the following decade and a half the extra unit would have been very welcome with a dose of hindsight.

Isn't that the one wabtec ripped the cab bulkhead out of without the knowledge of HSBC?

That was 65919, the undamaged DMC car from 365526, which is the car which seems to have slipped through the radar. The likelhood is it has been quietly scrapped at some point in the last few years, but no one seems to know. It was last seen at Wolverton.

There was a photo on Facebook showing that it still existed in July 2022 inside in Wolverton. Haven’t seen anything since.

There was never a spare class 365 bodyshell. There was a spare BREL class 465 bodyshell.

Using any form is spare bodyshell was never considered post Potters Bar to put 365526 back into service. The 3rd vehicle had a damaged headstock and twisted body end and sole bar which was considered beyond economic repair, the only reason that this vehicle wasn't written off was due to the lack of damage to underframe, bogies and interior.

At the time of Potters Bar Connex South Eastern weren't sweating their 365's so it was a relatively simple process to get them to sub lease 365502 to WAGN.

The spare class 465 bodyshell was considered, briefly, as a way of getting the 365 (who's number escapes me) involved in the Black Horse Drove level crossing incident, which sustained significant front end damage beyond just the composite cab skin, back in to service quicker.

This was discounted as viable pretty quickly when the crash worthiness difference in designs, given 365's were a 100mph unit and 465's are 75mph, and the cost and time associated were realised.

That would appear to be a spare Met Camm 465 bodyshell as it doesn't have vents like the BREL 465s

The one at BH is made of fibre reinforced resin or something similar. I posted about it over on another forum back in September but had no more info. Over there, I wrote:

Anyone have any info on the composite/fibreglass/plastic vehicle body (picture attached) at Barrow Hill please?
It's clearly an experiment, sitting on accommodation bogies, and with no internals or even ends or windows.

I found the makers, Hardcore-DuPont LLC, who are a US-based operation specialising in fibre-reinforced polymers, and an article about their involvement with composite materials in US railcars at:

But after extensive googling, no info on the car body at Barrow Hill.

365502 was only borrowed for a few months September-December 2002, it went back to Connex in January 2003.

365531 out of traffic October 2005 to March 2007.

Did anyone ever know any more about this? I was there last weekend and spent a while looking at this carriage and it’s construction etc but can’t find anything about it and I would love to know more,
