From Peter Spokes of the 400 Series Preservation Group on X: https://x.com/realPeterSpokes/status/2035349573011480656?s=20
In association with Angel Trains, East Kent Railway Trust and the 400 Series Preservation Group, we are delighted to announce the preservation of 466043.

Representatives from all 3 organisations have worked tirelessly over the past few months to ensure one of these units secured its place in railway history for future generations.

466043 was generously donated to the East Kent Railway Trust by Angel Trains in January and was selected as not only the final built unit in the fleet, but more importantly being in the best condition with only 500 miles accumulated on its running gear post C4 overhaul.

The 400 Series Preservation Group will act as custodians of the unit going forward, with sole responsibility for its care and maintenance alongside their varied fleet of Class 313, Class 508 and slam-door vehicles including the last surviving Class 421/8 unit.

The unit was collected from Ely this week and will be placed into temporary storage alongside 313201 until expansion plans have been addressed at the East Kent Railway site in Shepherdswell, after which it is hoped it will be available for visitors and enthusiasts to enjoy.

We’d like to express our gratitude to the staff at Angel Trains who have been nothing but helpful to ensure the entire process concluded smoothly.

If you'd like to donate to help cover the significant cost of our work to preserve this train (we have spent £7000 already!), then please head over to 400series.co.uk and hit the "Donate" button on the main page.
Good to see another EMU preserved, although I do feel old seeing trains from the 1990s going into preservation. Hopefully the East Kent Railway can complete its expansion soon so it isn't sitting in Llanelli for too long.

Great to see. The Metro-Cammell Networkers have always been a favourite of mine.

Wouldn't mind a ride around SE metals on a single 466. Do we think it could be used for one off tours.
Has anything like this then been returned/hired to a TOC to run scheduled services ( thus earning money for the group).

Have to say I kinda like the idea of a dinky lil' 466 running railtours across (and perhaps beyond) Kent, Moreso if it's repainted in NSE colours.

Can 73118 be modified to work with it I wonder? Ironic that the EKR was for such a long time the home of 5759 (2-EPB) which was of course replaced by the Networker!

043 has been out of service for too long really to be used on tours, and of course on the EKR it would have to be pulled by a loco (if that's even what they plan for it).

Also, any railtour concerning 466s, such as a farwell tour for them if they're withdrawn fully before the 465s, would likely need more than one unit attached, as 2 cars is not enough to cater for demand; I reckon at least 3x together would be needed (which did occasionally happen in service in the past).

I'm delighted that a class 466 is preserved, and significantly, the last one built.
I hope the group obtains sufficient spares to keep the unit in good condition. Could it be hauled by a loco without needing a translator vehicle?

If it was going to run on the EKR, whether with or without power from the unit, it would surely need a loco at both ends, as Eythorne doesn't have any run-round capability (nor does Shepherdswell when all the sidings/loops have other stock in them).

Great news that a 466 has been preserved, an entire unit too - quite handy for preservation groups having a 2 car version of the Networker design!

And also, because the Networkers never went through the major refurbishment programmes that the 455s did, this 466 is more original than the recently preserved SWR 455.

The 466 not being refurbished for accessibility purposes has been the reason many have been retired!

This being said, I hope if the 466s get a farewell tour (prior to 465s?), I hope some special dispensation can be given for them to run on their own.

Even the modified for accessibility 465/0/1/2s are still pretty similar to how they first appeared. Way more similar than the 455s, especially the SWT/SWR ones which long very different inside.

Didn't do much good for 456s though, but length definitely helped here yes.
Might be an unpopular opinion, but I cannot see any reason for preserving a 456. Of the slope fronted era of Mk 3 multiple units a 319 would make the most sense due to bi-current.

At least 1 example of a networker is useful for the historical record. A 365 would have been most useful (same logic as 319) seeing as only 3/4 of a unit survives a whole 466 is the next best choice.

A 769 would be a much better bet - it's actually then usable.

Don't know where they're going to put 466043 at the east kent railway as it isn't a massive site & they have a lot of stock there already.

Can the 466 units work with the 455 ? if possible, could space be found at Strawberry hill, and the unit operate on the mainline with the preserved 455, possibly on tours ?

Unfortunately not; the couplers might both be Tightlock but I think they're wired differently.
