Nuneaton - Cov services are supposed to be using a new bay platform to be installed at Coventry so wouldnt get through towards Kenilworth/Leamington.

Ah OK, I missed that COV was getting a bay platform for the Nuneaton services.

People are losing the jist of this thread, it isnt about what stations would be nice to have or people want.
Unless they are at a significant point of planning and have an element of funding and backing they will not be getting a thing out of this.

Haxby is just one of 14 bids for the new stations DfT fund of £20m.
DfT and NR are working on the options and an announcement of the winner(s) will be made later this month.

£20m is not much really, so there will be some disappointed bidders.
I can't see Kenilworth succeeding without the much more costly Coventry-Leamington upgrade scheme also being approved under CP5.

Am I right in thinking that Northern are opposed to the opening of Low Moor as it will cause yet more overcrowding and congestion on Caldervale services?

To me, if it gets built it should really be called 'Bradford Parkway' rather than Low Moor, and the powers that be really ought to make sure that the car parks are large enough, and have access from the nearby junction on the M606. The motorway junction itself is rather pointless atm as it serves only the adjacent industrial estate. Non-motorway access is via a tricky route along suburban streets!

I also understand that WYPTE plans for Low Moor involve only the Huddersfield-Selby and the stopping Leeds-Vic calling there, so that works against advertising it as an alternative to driving into the City centre though.

I think certain schemes are far more likely to go ahead as many are not far off the drawing board but some are. Some may only ask for a few million funding so you never know...

With regard to the posting that referred to the final decision/s that had to be made after the stated deadline of 25th February, it will be useful to note that when the successful Todmorden Chord/ Burnley Weavers Triangle bid from a similar scenario was decided, the news did not enter into the public domain for some time later.

It needs works at Leamington to use P4 but if they get funded then there is no reason why the service cannot work and it has been proven that a shuttle service can apparently.

The current plan is for more fast paths on the Stour line post HS2 not less. The problem of the 2nd XC path is all to do with the Kenilworth line not the Stour. Indeed pre-September 2004, there were 5 fast paths (2xVTWC, 2xSL, 1xVTXC) compared to the current 4 (3xVT, 1xXC).

Hidden away amongst today's announcements was this:

On the day before the 50th anniversary of the Beeching Report, the Transport Secretary is also able to confirm the 3 stations most likely to be built with support from the government’s New Station Fund. These are Ilkeston in Erewash (Derbyshire), Pye Corner in Newport West (South Wales) and Lea Bridge in Walthamstow (East London). We will make a final announcement in May.

They were very optimistic thinking they could get 4, they would require significant amounts of funding from elsewhere. Cynically it was always going to be the ones with the highest third party contributions that would win so that they could announce our £20m unlocking XX investment. Perhaps we could see the remainder of the fund being used to finance 'further studies and refinement' at the losers.

I'm disappointed not to see Peterlee in that list. There is a large population in East Durham that may as well be in a different country when it comes to travelling to other English regions. For example, if I arrive in my nearest station after early evening, I can't get home.
Admittedly all that is required is a better bus link to Durham, but this is not likely to happen either.
The 'transport poor' label to add to everything else.

What Grip stage was the new Peterlee station at? Does it have planning permission? Was it a 'shovel ready' scheme ready to be built during the next financial year? Is it mentioned in an RUS or Route business plan?

I think in the Haxby case WatcherZero could be right, with the key criteria being £Xm public money releasing £Ym private. Haxby's bid is based on the NSF money plus Council funds - there is no private sector funding involved. It will be disappointing if it doesn't go ahead, especially given the BCR of 6.19.

I can't recall reading anywhere that 'third party funding' explicitly meant 'private'. The application forms just imply that third party funding has to come from someone other than DfT/NR/TOC as far as I can work out.

NR had this on their explanation for instance:

...this competition is open to any third party promoter meeting the conditions of the fund but it is expected that most applications will come from Local Authorities and Passenger Transport Executives

Why would it be useless? I passed through the site of the proposed station today and it is in a thickly populated area. Why would passengers from Pye Corner not wish to travel to Cardiff? re the people living in the area any different to those at Rogerstone or Risca?

I'd have no problem with them being able to travel to Cardiff if they were first able to travel to their own city centre! The current arrangement is ludicrous. Adding more stations without passenger services on GAE will just drain more people from the suburbs and Western Valley away from their natural destination.

I appreciate your frustration regarding the lack of service to Newport; it is long overdue. However, when the trains eventually do serve Newport it will not remove the many attractions of Cardiff and it will remain the destination of choice for many.The Millennium Centre will still be there as well as the Millennium Stadium and the vastly superior shopping facilities. I have nothing against Newport but you are comparing apples with oranges and to suggest that the new station should not be built until it can serve Newport sounds like a bit of a tantrum.

Everyone wants to see services to Newport, the sooner the better, and just as importantly, the extension to Ebbw Vale town. The present terminus is not an incentive to anyone who wishes to travel to Ebbw Vale.

Cardiff is Cardiff and Newport is Newport. Both have their attractions and people who wish to visit either will do so, with or without the train.

I most certainly agree the extension to Ebbw Vale town needs to be given the go ahead urgently as well as perhaps extending the passing loop northwards
