Network Railcard minimum fare.

With an apparently ever increasing use of single leg pricing, which seems to me to be DfT policy, should the Network Card minimum fare, and other similar minimum fares, be altered to a lower value if buying a single? If you opt to buy two singles in one transaction whether at a ticket office, TVM, or online, presumably you’re effectively charged on the basis of a £26.00 minimum fare?

(Didn’t the 18-25 card have some sort of differentiation between single and return at one time?)

Yes, something like £8 single, £16 return until 2009, then the current £12 for any ticket.

As it stands, £13 for any ticket is better than £10 single, £20 return for most leisure uses. £10 single would be better for commuters using it in the evening peak, but they really aren't the discretionary market the railway has made the Network Railcard available for.

It should not be forgotten that it was commuters using a Network Railcard for their return evening peak journey that was essentially the trigger for the introduction of its minimum fare.

Inflation since the minimum fare went to £13 would now have taken the minimum fare above £20, indeed £25 if using RPI.
