I am led to believe there will be some changes in 2011 for Preston station.

Is it suppose to be platform extentions at 3 and 4 in order to accomodate the extendolino. I'm sure I read Preston had short platforms and needed to be extended...

and/or

Are there meant to be changes for Platform 1/2 and something along the lines of accomodating more freight paths?

Can someone shed some light or does anyone have more info

Pendolino platform lengthening is part of the DfT's separate contract for the longer trains.

Other platform lengthening is part of CP4 enhancements for 'Northern train capacity'.

The 'National Stations Improvement Programme', which I think your heading is possibly referring to, is different.

This is ring fenced funding for stuff like "Customer comfort, security and safety e.g. good standard of seats, good standard of station canopies, adequate CCTV; customer information and way finding including core station signage, concentrated passenger information and help points and clocks; customer facilities including customer toilets, retail facilities and customer waiting shelters...

(I copied that bit...)

Platforms 3 and 4 have plenty of room for 11-cars, there is no need to touch them, they can fit a whole, full-length Cally Highlander Sleeper with ease.

Platforms 5 and 6 will get extentions in order to accomodate them, the full length of the south end should cover it. I think they were planning to clear up platforms 1/2, and they may be other improvements on the way.

The Sleeper doesn't quite fit on 3 or 4. In the Up (southbound) direction the Sleeper hangs off the north end of platform 3 (it's booked routing) by the last one or two coaches. In the Down direction the signal is at the north end of both platforms. Platform 4s Up starting signal would need moving to the end of the platform to accommodate 11 car trains from it's current location near the Rail Gourmet offices which only really just fits a 9 car Pendolino with a little room left at the north end of the platform.

The same will need to be done for platform 5 which has its Up signal level with platform 4s. Platform 6s signal is already quite a way off the platform end.

There are plans to tidy up Platforms 1 and 2 with moving the shop/platform staff office further down the platform to create seating space and the small hut currently used by traincrew under the footbridge stairs is to be demolished to make space for toilets.
