Indeed. That's the one unelectrified bit of line where the proposal is unequivocal, with no other options suggested other than 3rd rail electrification. And on the option of AC :-

"AC electrification found to be grossly disproportionate in cost compared to the safety benefits gained"

Interesting.
I'm still very surprised that the North Downs is such a maybe option. 50% of the route is already electrified, so that's a lot of extra route miles for less electrification.
Also, it could move to SWR which would seem to me to be a more natural fit, and allow interesting future journey opportunities such as extending the Reigate terminators to Dorking.

SWR is not ideal though with no depot on the route, limited sidings at Guildford and nothing at Reading. Essentially, there would need to be fairly complicated diagramming to get the units on and off the route.

There is no chance of the pointwork or signalling being installed that would allow Dorking terminators from the Redhill direction. It wouldn't fit in with your SWR transfer idea either.

Pretty well ante any hybrid/hydrogen/battery solution which i guess is sensible given concentration of electric traction but seems to go against NR corporate's more recent pullback from alternative technologies

This document is less inspiring then the Wales & Western Regional Traction Decarbinisation Strategy document. There is a very poor discussions of sequencing among the schemes except potential sequencing of segments on the West of England Main Line between Basingstoke to Exeter.
