Network Rail Placement/Work Exp

It is evident that there are a significant number of industry insiders/professionals who read and contribute to RailUK, so this would seem like the ideal place to ask for help. I am in the third year of a four year University course in Town Planning, which will give me a masters qualification at the end. I very interested in the transport aspects of planning, (I'm currently writing my dissertation piece on High Speed Rail), and I would be extremely interested in doing an unpaid work placement in the planning section of Network Rail during my summer holiday. Would anybody be able to help me achieve this or point me in the right direction?

You'll probably already know that Network Rail have the placement scheme, although I gather there are not as many vacancies this year compared to the last few years. However, you can always try and see what happens.

A company which I worked for in the past few years took me in on an unpaid basis, and that lead to a paid role - although I was very lucky to get the second job, but if I hadn't have send that speculative e-mail I would have been doing a job totally unconnected to what I really needed.
