Hello Everyone!

Hope all are well. I took a rest from Network Rail data feeds but I'm back on them again. First of all congratulations to England for winning their Golden Medals :D

Now to my questions:

Does anyone know if the performance measures are per region?

If yes, the regions would be:

1) London and South East
2) London North West (south)
3) London North East (north)
4) Scotland
5) West

I got these regions from "6610_Network Interface Territory" Map

I'm trying to interpret the RTPPM feeds received :s

Would it be possible to reflect the data feeds on a map? Does Network rail provide any facilities?

With Kind Regards,
Amy

The RTPPM data is per-operator and per-service group. It roughly translates in to geographical areas, but it's not designed to reflect performance in an area.

Putting the raw data on a map is challenging, but not impossible. Don't expect to be spoon-fed anything from Network Rail - they can/will release raw data, but it's up to the developer community to make something of it. Value and innovation comes that way.

If you drop me a PM with your IM details, I'm happy to give you some guidance. There's also data at http://wiki.openraildata.info/ that might help

TSRs come through infrequently. Are you subscribing to the 'all' feed, or a specific area?

Ralph - why does your script time out? Is it expecting data and timing out because it doesn't get any (low-traffic feed)?

Possibly Poggs. Due to not knowing what format the feed took, I assumed it was rather like the RTPPM feed where it would just get a list of the current TSRs.

Is it only when the TSRs are implemented then?

(This is on the All feed).

I haven't looked at this feed specifically but for other infrequent ones such as the "Very Short-Term Plan" schedules feed, the schedules just come through as a one-off when they are introduced; you don't get a summary of all currently in-force schedules when connecting. I'm pretty sure you need to stay connected permanently "just in case" something comes through.

Yeah - in the year-and-a-bit I've used the TSR feed, it only contains updates and the very occasional 'daily refresh'.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have all TSRs refreshed once a day or something... ponder...

In the TD feed should a train jump berths? I was trying to follow my train to work this morning and got this:
7:00.25 - LB:1K90 moves from:0146 to:0138
then
7:01.43 - LB:1K90 moves from:0114 to:0102

I have earlier in the jounry got this:
6:55.53 - LB:1K90 moves from:0282 to:0274
6:56.24 - LB:1K90 moves from:0274 to:0244

So I expect my code is dropping some of the messages, but if someone could confirm if you can "jump" berths I'd be most grateful!

It's not much use unless it's reliable .... is there another way of obtaining this data ?

Agreed.

Knowing who you work for, if you're looking to use this data for a commercial thing and/or want some guarantee of service level, it might be worthwhile getting a connection direct in to NR's platform. It won't be cheap - you'll need an IBM WebSphere MQ server - but the chances are your IT people already have done.

Drop me an email if you want more details.

(Note to everyone else: This option is at least £14,000, so unless you're rolling in it, it's not a viable option)

Apologies, I didn't realise the reference data was on a site I haven't brought back in to life post-server reinstall! I will fix that over the weekend.

To be fair to Network Rail, they don't know what reference data is needed. That's where the community comes in - "Is there a list of STANOXes and TIPLOCs?" - and out comes a list.

Remember - this release is unlike any other release in that it's raw, unadulterated and so hideously detailed that it makes TfL's Trackernet system look like an abstraction!

Thanks Poggs for posting the AllBerthSteps csv file, it's great to see useful info on wiki.openraildata.info!

When I get a TD message like this:

"CA_MSG": {
"to": "0519",
"time": "1345557251000",
"area_id": "BE",
"msg_type": "CA",
"from": "0517",
"descr": "2J41"
}

Am I understanding right that the train has moved from the section controlled by signal 0519 in the area BE, past 0519 into the section controlled by signal 0517?

Is there any way of identifying where those signal locations are? I can't, for example find a from 0517 to 0519 berth step in the Berth Steps csv.

That's correct - although berths don't always match up with signals (they do in many cases) so be careful. A berth may be made up of a bunch of track circuits, but there are also blind berths and other things.

The CSV file contains all berth steps that relate to TRUST reporting points. There are 'block stepping schematic' diagrams which show which berths you can step from and to, but to be honest, they're not much help. The closest I've found are signalling diagrams which show signal heads, track circuits, point numbers and routes.

I am in the process of drawing out chunks of track for OpenTrainTimes and trying to align berths to signals and track circuits. It's an enormous job.

Ah gotcha, thanks for the speedy reply. Wouldn't it'd be great to have a data extract containing the signal diagrams in usable format with geolocations? I guess that's one for the future!

Let's come up with a standard way of representing the network and then crowd-source the task of generating a network map.

It seems that empty messages are no longer getting sent every 5 seconds when there are no messages to be sent. This isn't an issue at busy times but if no data is transferred for 1 minute then I am getting disconnected.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
All berth steps seem to be getting reported today, I just tracked a train all the way from Taunton to Paddington and nothing was missing.
