Hi, I want to apply for a job as a Mobile Operations Manager but I only have an automatic license for disability reasons. Will they make adjustments for this?

Providing an automatic vehicle would normally be a a reasonable adjustment I imagine. However, you will likely be track side responding to incidents that will, by their nature, not have been foreseen or planned for in detail. Any other adjustments you may require could therefore be much more difficult. That said, they have to give you a fair go. You might as well apply and see what they say. Best of luck.

I say the auto license might be an issue as far as I know Network Rail vehicles are generally manual, especially the MOM vehicles. Also you may well find the nature of the work my cause you issues, the MOM role is very much you fit it not if fits you when it comes to your ability to undertake the role.

Reasonable adjustments might not be reasonable to the role.

Hi, thanks for your response. In terms of adjustments the auto license is the only adjustment I have, I just wondered as I'd seen all the ad asks for is a UK Full License ofcourse an auto license is just that but I imagined most fleet would be manual.

Hi,

I've been told that I'd be a great fit for a MOM role I'm just hoping the license won't let me down.

Nothing like open and fair recruitment process where candidates are given “heads up” as to their suitability for a role.

I’d suggest they shouldn’t be telling anyone their a good fit or not at this stage experience prior to an interview.

You’ll probably know already MOM jobs are extremely sort after from within and externally on a par with driving jobs, so unless your top notch, and some I’d suggest (from experience) your being a lead up a garden path.

Although best of luck.

An automatic driving licence holder is restricted from driving manual vehicles, and thus by definition is not "full".

Indeed, I’m sure I’ve never seen a auto mom vehicle - as there common user not personal issue they need to be as user friendly as possible.

But the OP has been told by “management” their a good fit, so maybe they’ll have their own auto vehicle provided ?

How do you account for development ?

If my Manager thought I would be a good Instructor or a potential future Manager then why shouldn't they help me develop or encourage me to apply for a role ?

The process isn't compromised as any candidate will still need to go through it.

Maybe I’ve been on to long, and have seen unsuited applicants promoted beyond their ability to the negative effect of the wider workforce.

There are only two types of driving licence, full and provisional. What you can actually drive is determined by the categories it shows. Category B Auto (auto only) and Category B (as you might expect, manual or auto).

On the grand scheme of things provision of an automatic vehicle wouldn't be too much of an adjustment as they replace/renew vehicles on a fairly regular basis and anyone with a "full" licence will be able to use it as well, no need to disclose what your disability is however I would maybe suggest however that what ever the disability you have that prevents you using a manual vehicle may be an impediment on the actual requirements of the job trackside, I think that you will find that may be a bigger issue for you than the vehicle you drive.

Agreed. Depending on the disability, there may be reasonable adjustments for the role or there may not be practical adjustments - we can’t really tell unless you have a full disclosure/occ health assessment. That’s a bit more in depth than the original question though.

The last vans I’ve seen go were 10 and 12 years old. The 10 year old one only because it was written off my the insurer as uneconomical to repair. A lot/most vehicles have been replaced in the last couple of years (although I can’t see them coaxing these ones through a decade of service).

All MOM vehicles I know off are manual. They could provide an auto one but what happens when it has to go off to be repaired or serviced? I’ve known the vehicles been gone ages for whatever reason and hire vehicles in place.

There's a big difference between going "hey you'd be a good fit for this role" and hiring someone completely unsuitable for nepotistic reasons. Sometimes some people need that push and development.
