I was thinking Network Rail could raise a little extra cash (for infrastructure improvements etc.) by running a weekly lottery.

6 numbers - a 14 day All Line Rail Rover
5 numbers + bonus - a 7 day All Line Rail Rover
5 numbers - a monthly season ticket between two stations not more than 50 miles apart
4 numbers - one return trip on Eurostar
3 numbers - one return trip on South Eastern High Speed

Why would Network Rail want to run such a lottery? TOCs possibly might have an interest in it, though I doubt the DfT will approve of such a proposal.

Assuming you'd be basing it on the National Lottery I think you're prizes are too low in value compared to the probably of winning. A 14 day All Line Rail Rover on the rail Lottery or a ceiling-less cash prize that averages to around £4.2m. I think I know which one I'd prefer.

If you are suggesting a £1 ticket price then I'd suggest matching:
* One ball: a ticket up to the value of £5
* Two balls: a ticket up to £10 value
* Three balls: a ticket up to £30 value
* Five balls: a rail trip to Europe from your local station
* Five balls + Bonus : as Five balls but with 2 nights 3* hotel accommodation
* Six balls: Annual unlimited travel on UK rail network allowing First Class seating where available.

Then people might actually buy a ticket. I can't see 90% of the people north of Birmingham being interested in the range of prizes the OP posted.

So you want Network Rail to sell me a ticket, with odds of 1 in 13,983,816 for the prize of a 14 day ALR?

Although it would never happen and anyone offering the idea to NR would be carted out of their office in a strait-jacket, the prizes Jon mentioned are much more like potential lottery prizes.

There was a quiz show about ten years ago or so where one of the prizes was a trip round the M25. Can't get much worse than that.

I remember that can't remember the name of it but I think micheal barrymore was the host. Back OT I would by a ticket if I could win a rail trip round Europe, but I think for costs sake NR would insist you go from London and make your own way there because the cost of getting someone from Thurso to Paris say will be much higher than from say Ashford.

Or mandatory travel on Pacers for a month if you fail to match any numbers.

I was going put the Eurostar tickets as 4 balls but then I thought it would fit better with 5 balls.

What about:

The issue is here there would be a huge cost to Network Rail to provide this. Network Rail do not operate any passenger trains and would have to reimburse Atoc or the Tocs for the cost of the ticket. Except for those safeguarded, Network Rail employees do not get any free travel perks on the Tocs, and the season ticket rebate is paid for heavily by the company (and consequently its employees are taxed handsomely).

In addition, rollovers on the National Lottery are not an uncommon occurrence, even with around 30 Million tickets sold each week. I doubt such a lottery is likely to attract such interest, so you'd either have to reduce the numbers required or only allow a set numbers each week.

It reminds me of this new 'Health Lottery', that is being promoted. At first, I thought it was the NHS's new strategy at tackling the 'postcode lottery' for health treatment. Although, it now appears it isn't.
