It says to return it with in a week of the date on the letter, not sure if that's a working week or normal week. I'm sure they'll make an exception if the medical form is missing. I'm worried in case I have some underlying medical condition and it turns out I can't get the job!

I've also applied for S&T.

It says on one of your forms what position you have been given, I got the only signalling job at Preston, even though on my interview e-mail it said OHL! How old are you as I'm thinking I will be the youngest there at 17 till December! :P

Quite likely. I'm really excited too, also a little nervous, naturally. I meant to ask, why were you asking about Virgin at your interview?

Was just thinking of any questions to ask, such as if their contract is running out soon why are they bringing in new carriages and new trains. Also I travel with them alot.

I was thinking do we get it at the actual medical, like when we go and have eye's/Hearing etc tested? But it says specifically on 2 documents that it is included in the pack, and that it has to be sent off....

What was their answer, Rwhunited? The ToC's don't own the trains, they are just leased. Maybe that has something to do with it. I like East Midlands Trains myself, they run the line where I live but I have travelled with other ToCs and don't think they are as good as EMT. They have made alot of improvements to the trains and the stations since they have been running, I really like their class 222s.

The long and short of it was that they have a sneaking suspicion that they will get the extension of the contract after 2012, also asked them why they abandoned the 140mph limit, they said it was to do with track wear, got into a half hour conversation with the guy about how he worked on a 1mile point in France for the Eurostar, and I personally love the 390 and 395, brilliant trains.


Also yeah they will get at least 3 calls that I know of here, not to mention the 217 others

My Dad is driving me and my Grandad on the day, train would be too expensive for them both, also we wouldn't get there for 10am

The advice I recommend is ask as many questions, stay calm and make a good impression!

Yeah they where (I don't think they are the EXACT same) but they do give you a good idea, in my interview I was told not to go to much in depth into the answers, a question like "Talk us through a process" they told me to talk about waking up in the morning, not how a circuit process works. I don't know if it will be the same for you. Good luck, it really isnt all that bad.

The questions in the email are sort of like the main themes and they ask you questions within those, if that makes sense. They have a form with set questions so that everyone has the same.

Get used to them, because they're pretty much the same questions as you'll be asked in the interview for your first job once you graduate!

You get re-interviewed once you finish the apprenticeship? We was told at our assessment day that it is a guaranteed job after the apprenticeship?

My interview was really relaxed. I was worrying about it loads before I went but I gave myself plenty of time to get there and tried not to get too nervous and it turned out to be nothing to worry about. I hope it goes well for you.

Well done on getting a place. My paperwork was missing the medical form too, so am also planning to phone them tomorrow. As you saw I'm going to the open day on 3rd August too, are you taking anyone with you? I don't think it will be too awkward, after all I didn't know anyone at the assessment day but as we were all in the same position everyone got talking.

For anyone who may be interested, here is the basic kit you need to take:
Duvet covers x2 (single)
Pillow cases x4
Fitted sheets x2 (single)
Protective mattress cover x1 (single)
Towels x2 (at least)
Sports towel & swimming costume
Laundry bag
Name tags for clothing
Jogging bottoms/t-shirts and trainers indoor/outdoor
Casual clothing
'Evenings out' wear
Underwear/socks/sleepwear
Football/Rugby boots
Qualification certificates (not copies)
Proof of ID (over 18s)
Coat/jacket
Coat hangers
Hair dryer
Slippers/flip flops
Padlocks x2
3x plain white t-shirts for sports/fitness training (part of syllabus)
Scientific calculator
Coloured pencils
Assortment of biros/pencils
12" ruler and protractor

There's loads of information in the paperwork but obviously you'll get it in due course.

The one thing guaranteed is that you will have a position within the company. Unless there is space at the right level for you in the teams you worked with and will be slotted right in (if you wish), you will have to apply and be interviewed for any other jobs you apply for just like any other internal applicant. Sometimes this is inevitable as there is not always space in the maintenance teams. June/July time always sees the start of Apprentice graduates fishing for jobs on the internal vacancies.

Anyone here getting or waiting on a job in scotland? there seems to be a lot of people still to hear anything and the open day at gosport seems to be on 3rd august not a lot of notice for getting transport if its good news and it will be expensive for me and my dad to both travel if we book at this late stage!

With the United Utilities it's a guaranteed job at the end of the apprenticeship that's where I got confused

3rd August isnt the only one I think, I was offered 27th July, 3rd August and another later on I think

Bin the coloured pencils, bin the football boots (unless you want to play of course), bin the hairdryer, take a laptop if you have it. I can't recommend a padlock strongly enough. Take highlighters, you'll need them. For simplicity's sake, buy a Casio FX85 calculator or similar, as that's what the instructors use and the processes for log and so forth are explained using it. Some had Texas Instrument calculators and couldn't fathom the damn things out when everything was based on a Casio.

They're getting cheap. We had gym t-shirts and jogging bottoms issued for us. Still have the t-shirts, and the joggers were the comfiest I have EVER worn.

I think it's reasonable that you might not get a job in the same gang but I'm not worried too much as they aren't going to spend three years and x amount of money training you then just show you the door.

I see what your getting at, hopefully they will need a signalling engineer at Preston!
