Just found this on the Network Rail site: http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browse...twork\Working Group 5 - Alternative Solutions I've not seen it posted before, it discusses alternative solutions to multiple units, including light rail conversion, tram-train, battery powered trains, hybrid light rail, personal rapid transit and electrification viability on lightly used routes.
I'm not looked through it properly yet so can't expand on that.
It includes a picture of a 150/1 stopped at my local station.
