Network Rail Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme 2012

As stated above,

NWR will be taking applications for the new scheme from the 6th February 2012. To apply you must go to the apprenticeship page on Facebook.

All the information you need to know is there, you can even ask questions if you need to, (I'm available as one of the apprentices to answer questions) here is the link:

I used this forum last year to find out about the scheme and talk to others who were applying at the same time, it was very helpful, I'd like to think it would help others this year to. I successfullly got on to the scheme and would highly recommend it.

We'll soon find out, if it doesn't I will be emailing them to ask how people who are NOT member of facebook can apply for the post on a level playing feild, and why one of the richest (in assets) companies in the country cannot afford to use it's recruitment site that is already in place (although last time I checked they have at least two different systems) to recruit teenage apprentices...

Yes Facebook...

You don't have to be a member of Facebook to apply, so not really a problem.

I don't think its aimed at teenagers more than anyone else, there is no upper age limit, I got onto the scheme and I'm 21 and there is apprentices older than me.

This years recruitment pages are hosted on Facebook, however you do not need to be a member to view them, nor do you need to be a member to click on the "Apply" button which will be available from tomorrow.

Forgot to say - there is no upper age limit, however this years apprentice applicants do need to be 17 by 8th September 2012.

I got recruited off a "networking" site once before but it wasn't advertised, just got asked if I wanted a job.

And whenever I clicked any links it said, "You must be a member to interact with this member." It also brings into mind that it makes is very very easy to trace questionable histories by social networking when it's directly linked to their account, anyone else wonder why I have no discernible on-line presence based on my real name?

For those going through the process of recruitment for Network Rail this just seems to be another in a long line of unprofessional procedures, not least contradicting their on communications, taking months to get back to you for a simple psychometric test, and continually changing their mind as to if they wish to progress your application or not...

Side question Hydro, is your section under the control of Network Rail now, or is it still Serco RailTest?

Network Rail, and has been for some time. The last remnants of Serco involvement were the drivers, and they went to DB in '09.

I thought I'd have a go at applying as it looks like a really interesting scheme. One problem, the path I'm most interested in is the 'Telecoms' one, I've tried choosing all of the depots but no matter which I select, the telecoms option doesn't appear.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

Edit: Don't worry, realised the depots you can choose are based on your address.

Heh, looks like the're using gradweb recruitment services rather than facebook...

Good luck to all of those attempting to get their application actually completed properly without massive segments disappearing and all your formatting magically changing...

I applied, had no problems with the application at all.

If a certain area isnt showing at a depot, it means that it isnt done at that depot (for example, telecoms and OHLE isnt available at Brighton).

I know they've changed the applications this year but I can tell you about last year. At the assessment day they took copies of our exam certificates, gave us a talk on the scheme and we got the chance to meet current apprentices to ask any questions we had. We also did all the assessments on the day, I believe this year some of the assessments are being done at home. There was also a team building activity in which you were observed.

Last year the interviews were done at the depots. There was a form with set questions to make sure everyone had the same interview but I think there was still some variance. It was a formal interview. I think they are doing interviews at the assessment day this year to make sure everyone is dealt with the same and it also took a while to arrange interviews for everyone last year. I think I waited around three months after my assessment day to get the date for my interview!

After the assessment day and interview the final stage was a medical.

Here's a section of the email they sent last year regarding the interview.

The aim of the interview is to find out more about you and your reasons for wanting to join this particular scheme. We will also be asking you about your experiences to date that you think are relevant to your application and which are important to us to be able to assess your suitability for this opportunity.

In particular you may want to prepare for your interview by thinking about the following areas: your experience of taking responsibility when you have had to learn something new when you have had to organise something when other people have had to rely upon you how you will cope with working shifts and in all weathers how you will get to work when working shifts You may find it useful to think of specific examples in these areas that you will be able to discuss in the interview.

Overall, we will want to know why you want to be a Network Rail Engineering Apprentice and specifically your reasons for choosing your preferred area of work (Track, Signalling, Electrification and Plant, Telecoms, Mechanical Locking or Fleet).

Hi , Ive reached the assessment day for network rail apprenticeship and Im trying to find example tests for the Fault finding and mechanical reasoning tests , these dont exist on SHL anyone any examples or suggestions I have done other types but have been told that these are not like those done by SHL.....Any other advice would be welcome too as to interview etc.....Thanks
