As a 15 year old I used to change at Stockport from Sheffield to get the 1115 to Southport, 0954 ex Chester, booked a 101! arrived at 1232 in Southport!
Tortuous route.

Probably quicker to swim from Chester to Southport. Certainly much more direct.

Though it was obviously just for convenience - the idea being to link up north Manchester and south Manchester services to provide Stockport-Bolton links etc, with few going end-to-end. Just so happened that it was presumably easiest to link the Southport service and the Chester service as the times fit.

For those who might be interested, my good friend Adam Stephenson has recently added a few photos of the old Network NorthWest station branding...

Sure, I just sometimes wonder the extent to which these circuitous routes may attract unwitting occasional rail users - for example, at Chester, who may see a service to Wigan that causes them to not take the faster route (with a change) via Warrington BQ.
