Network card minimum fare, per ticket?

I'm trying to work out whether getting a network card is beneficial to me. It seems to come down to whether the minimum fare is per journey, or per ticket. If I split my fare and the total exceeds the minimum fare is that okay, even if neither ticket individually exceeds the minimum?

I think in practice it's enforced per-ticket. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The T&Cs say per journey so you could try and argue the point but I doubt you'd get very far at most ticket windows and certainly no online booking engines would look at your basket and apply a discount to your journey.

6) A £13 minimum fare applies to all journeys Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. A £1 minimum fare applies to child fares at all times. Travelcard minimum fares also apply - see minimum fares page for details. Please note, minimum fares are subject to change during the validity of your Railcard.

Also this from the Minimum Fares section, the last sentence fudging the issue:

Minimum Fares

The minimum discounted adult fare payable is £13 on all journeys Monday to Friday. The minimum fare does not apply at weekends or on Public Holidays.

The minimum discounted child fare payable is £1 at all times.

The minimum fare payable for Anytime Day Travelcards is £16.40 at all times. The minimum fare payable for Off-Peak Day Travelcards is £13 Monday to Friday and £5.90 on weekends and public holidays.

Minimum fares apply to each individual travelling, not to the total value of tickets purchased.

If the minimum fare applies per journey, then it becomes quite complicated to implement, for example, when buying multiple tickets in one online transaction involving several journeys.

Agreed that you are unlikely to get very far arguing this technicality.

Not to mention the fact that some people buy split tickets for a journey where only one of the tickets is for travel within the Network area. Clearly in that case the discount can only apply to the ticket within the area, not the whole journey.

We had this exact discussion a couple of weeks ago (maybe slightly longer ago) and it says per journey in some places and per ticket in others.

Of course the TOCs usually like to deter passengers from travelling and encourage us to use other modes where possible, so the intention is probably the least advantageous to the customer, so per ticket in this case.

The £13 minimum really annoys me, although I do at least feel I am getting some more value by sometimes buying a ticket from a station further out than I need - given it still costs £13 either way!
