Netherlands: NS sends guards to 'whistling course'

Starting this Easter, Dutch national railways (NS) won't replace guard's whistles anymore when they're damaged or lost. The model which is used by NS is no longer being manufactured, and since NS wants to reduce its economic footprint they have invented a new eco-friendly replacement.

The problem itself is absolutely not an April fools joke. The whistles were hand made by a skilled woodworker, but unfortunately he has passed away. Before he died, he had already made quite a few spares, but NS is running out of those and there are, as far as I know, almost zero left.

Sure. The Dutch take environmental and social issues very seriously. Therefore NS will replace the existing signalling with a system which uses no electricity and reduces unemployment
