As far as I know, Hibernation is the same as shutting down, it just saves an "image" of the desktop to your PC so that it can boot up and run the same as it was faster.
Hibernation is basicly the computer on tick over as it stills draws a certain amount of power either from the battery or from the AC. With a shutdown all programs and sessions are completely exited with the computer drawing no power.
As I say, the difference is slight but it is there, which is why PCs give you that option.
Hibernation saves the contents of RAM to the hard drive before shutting the computer down entirely.
When you restart, the data is reloaded into RAM and you can resume where you left off.
Sleep just puts the PC into a low power mode, where it still draws power. You'd lost data if it were in sleep and the power was interupted.
