Hi all,

Friend was travelling on the tram upto Hucknall. On the way back they had their card checked and it showed they hadn't tapped on. This was because it was over a certain amount of time since they first tapped on in the morning. They thought that you only needed to tap on once and it would charge them the cap. They were issued with a penalty fare and have already submitted an appeal which they're sending a form for. Any suggestions, this was a genuine misunderstanding (I know you hear that a lot of here but in this case it's true!)

Well, I thought you tapped on before every journey you make. So once before you go Nottingham to Hucknall, and the same when you come back, you tap in again. At some point, after a few journeys, it caps.

Taping once charges a single fare. The second tap would put you at the day rate assuming that none of your journeys were short hops. Sadly do not see anappeal succeeding but there is no harm in trying.

We’d need to see the penalty fare notice to be able to assist, and ideally a copy of the appeal that’s already been submitted too.

In penalty fare cases this doesn’t really matter. A penalty fare is considered an appropriate way of dealing with a genuine mistake.

How would you know? We've not even seen the penalty fare notice.

Contactless on our validators​

Our lime green validators accept contactless payment for adult singles and day tickets. Just tap your contactless bank card or phone at the start of your journey – you’ll see a green tick and hear a beep once payment has been made. No need to tap out (unless you’re using a short hop ticket – more on that below). You must tap on before each trip.

Our staff out on the network have the ability to scan debit/credit cards to check that a ticket purchase has been made, should we request to see your ticket.

Attached is the PF. Thanks for all the replies so far although I think he realised he'd misunderstood the system when he was issued a penalty fare? Likewise I can't see an appeal succeeding but no harm in trying.
