"Camp Coffee", besides its contained water and sugar elements, also contains only 4% caffeine-free coffee essence but does have 26% chicory essence.

What did you drink "back in the day" before the advent of all the Coffee Shops.

Being the age I am, I can still recall the excitement in the mid 1950s of being taken by my parents to the Kardomah Café in St Ann's Square in Manchester, as a treat for coming top of the class in the Upper Third and then the Lower Fourth (Classics) at St Bede's College.

Incidentally, in the same locality was the famous Meng and Ecker establishment where the finest cakes and pasties were served.

Is there anyone else on this website local to Manchester who visited either of these two places in Manchester in that same time period?

Talking of cheap Coffee - has anyone tried one of the new Easy Coffee Shops that knock out a brew for £1 ?

Not sure where they are but the Orange will be appearing in more places shortly I'm sure.

Pret filter is pretty nice, too, beats any kind of cheapo poorly-maintained bean to cup espresso machine.

(For bean to cup to be nice you really have to maintain the machines well, particularly the milk-related parts - that's why it's vile on the railway - whereas filter can be done incredibly badly and still taste really nice)

Exactly, and most people operating said machines use too much heat and pressure, almost always burn the coffee. Filter you don't have any chance to.

Not only remember them but served them during summer holidays in 1966/7/8. Also, as an ex-employee, got to point out Wimpy without the e, 'cos we never built homes as a sideline

I only just remember Wimpy bars, and by the time I got to them as a kid they were more of a McD's clone (though I remember the fish and chips being nice).

There was a Whimpy still open in Tiverton when I worked up there in the early 2000s. I remember the coffee in glass cups from years ago too. Did Burger King take over Whimpy in the end?
Anyway, Nescafé. Horrible stuff in my opinion, bitter and cheap tasting, my other half bought me a coffee machine for Christmas one year and I can't get on with instant now. I don't even have sugar in it as it tastes nice anyway.

I think BK UK is the same company as Wimpy was, they just converted the outlets. There are still Wimpy bars dotted about owned by a South African company now I believe.
