I just thought I'd mention this here in case anyone is interested...
Back in the 1960s, my father-in-law, Maurice Burns helped form a steam locomotive preservation society - the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG)
Their initial aim was to buy two steam engines from British Rail. He actually wrote out the cheque that bought one when he was just 21 years of age and by the time he was 23 he and other volunteers, had restored the 80 ton machine to working order.
Later he became the societies Chief Mechanical Engineer and restored many other engines including Blue Peter, that worked all over the BR network.
In 2016 the society celebrates its 50th Anniversary. To mark the event, a special book: Keeping North Eastern Steam Alive, has been written (mostly by my Father-in-law) telling the real inside story of their work. The book will be for sale from October 28. All Royalties from the book will go towards the locomotives future maintenance. The book also contains a huge amount of historic photos of the locos and the people involved in restoring them.
Amongst the revelations is what happened when Blue Peter was departing Durham and the engine was destroyed in a 140mph wheel-slip caused by inadequate driver training from BR.
