Need some help planning next years trip

Morning all, I'm in need of some help planning next years railway jaunt , I'm getting myself an 8 in 15 severn and solent rover ticket, what I'm looking for is a cottage/flat/house rental somewhere very close to a station around the center of the map (within walking distance), so my wife and sister are free to explore the area with the car and I can disappear on the trains, http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/static/documents/promotions/Freedom_of_Severn_Solent.pdf
if anybody has any suggestions I would be extremely grateful, I succeded this year with a house 20 yards from lostwithiel station, I'm hoping for something as close for next year, many thanks in advance Mr fridge

Taunton's almost on the edge of the rover area.

The best central position for a FOSS is Westbury, but there's b***r all in terms of accommodation there, plus it's not called the desert without reason. Just up the way a little at Trowbridge may be better, or even Bath. If you're planning on spending more time on ex SR metals, then Salisbury is your best bet. Salisbury is a good location for the other half too, as well as Salisbury itself, it's close to Stonehenge/New Forest/Bournemouth etc.

Ps From Salisbury you can get to the IOWSR and back quite comfortably in a day. Extra ticketing beyond Pompey of course.

I'm looking at doing something similar next year and was considering Chippenham. Not exactly in the centre but seems you can get to the extremes of the area and back quite easily, particularly with the improved service to Melksham.

Otherwise it would be (as previously suggested) Bath or Salisbury or even Bristol. Bath/Salisbury seem to be quite expensive in terms of accommodation but I would imagine Lostwithiel wasn't particularly cheap either!

This is the area I've been looking, your right about westbury it is a desert, found one near trowbridge but I might have to cart my bike down from Cumbria on the back of the car as its not walking distance from the station, the wife seems keen on Bradford on avon as we passed through it last week, Bath looks good but the accom is expensive, Frome's also an option as well, but I'm going to carry on hunting unless someones got a camper van they can lend me for free !!!

The lostwithiel house was brilliant, close to the pubs/shops/restaurants and the dining room window overlooked the station, would recommend it to anyone who wants to tour devon/cornwall and the Bodmin and wensford railway is only 10 mins up the road, ok for £600 pw

Although a bit "off-centre", if you avoid the school holiday period, somewhere like Weston Super Mare may have the lowest cost flats (or B&B) .
