Need help producing a railway cross section!

For a school project we've been set the task of accurately producing a cross section for a double track railway over a bridge -

Obviously I am completely new to the rail industry so I have no clue regarding the distance between tracks and sets of tracks and distances to escape walkways etc.

The Type of train using the track is the ones which use the Tyne and Wear metro

Can anyone help me out here - just about anything would be helpful!

your starting point might be the wikipedia pages on track gauge and loading gauge...

not sure about T&W but most metros in uk use same track gauge as mainline, just that actual track, sleepers & ballasting can be lighter.

loading gauge might be a different story though, metros may have narrower stock/tighter clearance due to restricted urban space and lower speeds.

I am no expert, but I believe that as a general rule of thumb the OHLE is lower on the Metro than it is on the mainline too!!

Check the model railway forums one of them has a very nice drawing showing most of what you are looking for. (sorry can't remember which one)
