Southwest jet attempting to land at Chicago Midway Airport nearly collides with a private plane on the runway

A Southwest Airlines plane and a private jet experienced a close call at Chicago Midway International Airport on Tuesday morning in which the flight crew had to perform a go-around to prevent a potential incident.

Southwest Flight 2504 landed safely at the Chicago airport after avoiding the other aircraft on the runway, according to Southwest.

“The crew followed safety procedures and the flight landed without incident,” a Southwest spokesperson said in an email to CNN. “Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees.”

Here's the ATC and animation:

Unless something's been edited out, seems a pretty clear case of the pilot failing to hold short of the runway - admittedly the second of three parallel runways while he was taxiing on a perpendicular runway.

Had it happen to me at Glasgow airport when a light aircraft decided to use the runway we were landing on - fortunately, the pilot spotted it as we were feet away from landing.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
One of the scariest close calls I've seen in years. Kudos to the Southwest folks upfront and I hope the FlexJet pilot had a bit more to deal with afterwards beyond 'here's a number you need to call'.

That was my read/ look of the video too. Kudos to the WN (Southwest) pilot.

It could have been very different in poor visibility, or even just night time when all the runway lights would make those of a crossing aircraft difficult to discern. The pilot initiated the go-around, and even had the controller instructed it a few seconds later, as soon as they engage the thrust reversers they are committed to landing.

Runway incursions have been increasing in recent years.
