NCL to NCL via Hepscott Jn

Realtime trains shows two paths (never used when I look) NCL to NCL via Hepscott and Morpeth North every weekday. Diesel locomotive. East Coast.

Does anyone know anything about why and what? I did wonder if it was to turn a class 43, but it looks like a simple out and back.

Route learning for diversions?

There is a similar path from Newcastle via Durham Coast to Northallerton.


The latter was useful yesterday after the signal failure in Newcastle.

One if the problems with the ECML being wired is that there are few alternative routes.

AFAIK, those paths are simply there in case the Thunderbird
hasn't been used in a while and the batteries need charging up!hock:

Is that not what Tracey Island is for?

Do they use the path for route learning?
