I'm sure this has been asked before but will MK3 and MK5 stock be compatible to the point of being used in a mixed rake?
They may be capable of physically coupling and have compatible braking systems - and maybe even allow through control from either end - but I can't see anybody going out their way to make them more compatible than that.

What's the bonus of making them compatible?

How much work (= cost) would be required to make it all talk?

How much extra testing of stuff like CDL and checking that it all talks correctly - could one circuit control slam doors on the mark 3s and electric ones on the mark 5s.

In short, a enormous no.

I have a feeling a mix of slam and automatic doors in one formation is a no no. It was mentioned a few years back when the future of the AGA Mk3s was still being decided and that was a big sticking point.

Is that not the case on the 150s? They have slam doors at the cab ends and auto doors for passenger use

Thats a crew door though, 442s also have a slam door in the guards compartment.

I know that... I thought Edge was saying that slam and auto couldn't work together and was pointing out stock that did have that ability. (side note: always a thrill to board through the crew door...!)

Interlocked passenger doors and non-interlocked crew doors are two entirely different kettles of fish. While there are units with both types of door as far as I'm aware there aren't any with a combination in use as passenger doors in normal service (short platform working arrangements etc excluded)

The crew doors on 150/1s (and, I assume, the 2 prototypes) are not used as passenger doors at any time apart from occasional stragglers being watched through. The automatic doors by the cabs on 150/2s often become passenger doors if that cab is sandwiched within a consist.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that the mk5s could be made to be compatible with "Chilternised" mk3s, but as there's no need to specify it there's no need to provide it.

The 150/1's and the prototypes were unique in that way despite their spartan look they were built as recently as 1983-85.

Did the stock move to Laira then? There was talk of a move over a week or so ago with a DRS Class 68 taking it.

Still at Norwich AFAIAA.

There was a move in the system for it, but was cancelled as it was blocked in by a demic Anglia set.

Still on 9rd at Crown Point & split to allow for a depot walkway across to the fuel pad.

If you mean unique because of the none interlocked crew doors, that's not true as the Class 141s where the same.

Aye, the method of keeping the public away from these areas on the inside used what was at the time ground-breaking futuristic technology: a steel bar!

Maybe the mechanical side of things at Laira (or Devonport?) Then internals at a wabtec/knoor bremse site maybe? (Pure guess disclaimer)

To you TPE guys looking forward to it I hope they do a blooming good refurb because last time I worked it it was in a right state. In fact the Riviera Mk2s are in better condition.

Anyone know what's on it?

is it 024?

And what's strange about the route?
Down to London via Ely to avoid the overcrowded bit east of Stratford, round the North London line then down the GWML, seems the obvious route to me?

What work is being done on them at Laira that cannot be done at Norwich Crown Point. GWR send its HST MK 3's away for work in Scotland?

It may just be that Laira has spare capacity and put in the best commercial bid for the work. Also TPE and GWR are both First Group companies.

No inside knowledge, but it wouldn't surprise me if the local management & workforce at Laira are looking to do more of that kind of refurbishment work (if they can get it) to replace work on HSTs that will disappear as the IETs enter service.

Are these Mk3s that bad?!

On the basis that the RFMs will be the only first class carriages in the two TPE rakes, the three FOs will be 'reseated' and declassified to TSOs, to give a total of eight. Hopefully all will get a retrim to match?

As for paint wibble, maybe a plain grey livery? ;)
