Nostell Priory near Wakefield is served by bus from either Wakefield Bus Station (accessible from either station using the FreeCityBus) or indeed from Fitzwilliam railway station in the case of Arriva route 496 Wakefield-Doncaster.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
There's also the National Trust Alderley Edge site in that area (but on a different train line.)

There are two National Trust properties in that area:-

Hare Hill.
This is a walled garden complex. Open March to October.
However it is equidistantly situated 2 1/2 miles between Prestbury and Alderley Edge railway stations.

Nether Alderley Mill. One of only four remaining corn mills in Cheshire.
However, it is now only opened to pre-booked groups of a certain number.

I was referring to the one called 'National Trust Alderley Edge'

You did mention Liverpool/Southport as an area and whilst not a National Trust area as such. if you get the train to Hall Road station and take the short walk down Hall Road West to the promenade, the 100 life-sized statues of the Anthony Gormley creation on the beach called "Another Place" can be accessed, but make sure that you look at the Tide Tables before setting off, to ensure that it will be low tide during your visit.

Done that, thanks Paul. Seen the full statues twice and the tops of their heads once . Another time we set off walking from Hall Road station in gale force winds that were so strong we never made it to the beach! Bit silly really, hadn't reckoned with the wild conditions that can occur on that coastline. Incidentally, have they closed the Coastguard Station there yet? I know it was destined for the chop :(.
