Lol...yeah and if people doing fares knew how to do things then @kieron's job would be so much easier lol
There's also seemingly a distinct lack of any ability to test the changes being made.

PMS have tools to edit all of this data, sometimes not with all the options they actually require, but they have no way to test the effect of the easements/routeing they're creating on a real journey planner to see if they work.

It's very frustrating, both for them and for retailers, because they need to keep trying things until they work, or rely on someone to contact them to ask for something specific which will actually have the effect needed, or just give up.

I write with my professional (software testing) hat on, the ability to specifically test that changes are having the desired effect is an absolute must (at least against some standard engine) in a normal world. Testing against unforeseen knockon effects (effectively regression testing a change against everything else), becomes increasingly hard given the complexity of fares and the number of potential combinations. It would turn into an exercise in risk management - being able to at least check the change specifically would seem like an absolute minimum.

Though, maybe it's not seen as a commercial risk - if a change is made to close a hole and it results in either not closing said hole, or it actually makes things more expensive for travellers, then really there's no loss (an potentially a profit). Thus seen as low risk.

Some changes were published in the routeing guide on Monday.
Changes from 19 Dec 2025 (626) to 22 Dec 2025 (627).

Easement changes:

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701459 (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling from Stratford-upon-Avon to West Brompton can travel via Leamington Spa, Coventry and Watford Junction Wycombe to West Brompton. This Routeing easement will apply in both directions.
This changes the wording. Stratford-upon-Avon has been added as an applicable location, but I don't think that does anything. As before, I don't know what this easement is intended to do.

In addition, the data for easement 701458 has changed. It now has London Marylebone as an applicable location. The text remains:

701458 (Fare route) Passengers travelling from Stratford-upon-Avon to West Brompton can travel via Dorridge and High Wycombe to London Marylebone and onwards. This Routeing easement will apply in both directions.

I haven't noticed either easement having an effect on which routes nre.co.uk (for one) list as being valid with a through ticket.

This appears to not be a permitted route because the journey is only mapped when using routes to and from London.

The fares check for Stratford-u-Avon to West Brompton returns appropriate destination routeing points of Watford Juntion, Willesden Junction and Hayes Group.

TIPLOC WLSDWLJ (Willesden West London Junction) is rightly or wrongly linked to Willesden Junction station, so all the Watford Jn - East Croydon trains timed to pass through this timing point will be seen as passing through Willesden Junction, so Watford Junction will never be selected as the destination routeing point.

The only mapped routes from Stratford-u-Avon Group to Willesden Junction require travel via London:
BB → WR → LONDON → EC → OV
BB → WR → LONDON → EN
GC → LONDON → EC → OV
GC → LONDON → EN
SM → EN → LONDON → EC → OV

But journey planners won't find this, as it's a slower way to travel, so they can never find a permitted route by default. If you do actually search for this journey via London Euston, for example, then through tickets are available.

Screenshot 2025-12-24 at 02.44.22.png

This should really be fixed by adding mapped route SM+EN between Stratford-u-Avon Group (G72) and Willesden Junction. This is already a mapped route for G72 to Watford Junction and other locations on and around the WCML, so it shouldn't be controversial.

This issue also affects some other mapped journeys nearby, like Warwick/Leamington Spa to West Brompton.

While they're there, maybe they can also add SM+EN+OV to some other mapped journeys from West Mids/Warwickshire so that people aren't forced to travel via London Terminals (and hence also via the Tube) for other routeing points like:
  • Clapham Junction
  • Richmond (London)
  • Gospel Oak
  • Highbury & Islington
  • Stratford Group
  • Barking
These could similarly be made using the West London Line or Overground, but currently are not permitted with a through ticket and require a split enroute or a Travelcard.

[Stratford-u-Avon -> Dorridge -> High Wycombe -> Marylebone -> Euston/Queens Park -> Willesden Junction -> West Brompton] is already a permitted route on a through ticket.

I can't see any reason for this easement to exist, let alone the fact it's meaningless in its current Fare Route form anyway.

Screenshot 2025-12-24 at 02.40.54.png

Sometimes it is faster to travel on WMR from Stratford to Small Heath/Tyseley and then towards Marylebone via Dorridge. This isn't permitted as there is no link from Stratford-u-Avon to Tyseley on a mapped route from Stratford-u-A to Willesden Jn.

I don't think this easement is intended to change that, but I also don't think this is that unreasonable of a route. Maybe it would be sensible for map combination BI+GC to be added to Stratford-u-Avon Group to London Group to permit this journey too.

Easement 000103 already exists to stop people taking the mick with a circuitous Stratford - Tyseley - Birmingham - Coventry - Leamington - Marylebone route which this map combination would otherwise permit.

On a ever so slight tangent, I wonder why Avanti's Travelcards are routed VIA BIRMINGHAM on this flow. It seems a bit odd, considering it's not the fastest route by any means. If it's an attempt to get more money from the fare, I would have maybe expected VIA COVENTRY.

An Any Permitted ticket from Stratford-u-A to London is not valid via Birmingham unless you travel via Bearley/Claverdon for the same missing link reason as above.

The routeing guide has been updated three times (so far) this week.

The following changes were published on Monday:
Changes from 22 Dec 2025 (627) to 05 Jan 2026 (628).

Easement changes:

Added:

701460 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 17 January and 25 January journeys to and from Dundee via LNER, ScotRail and Cross Country can travel via Camelon (CMO). This map easement applies in both directions.
This is a map easement for the same dates as easements 701438 and 701446. This is intended to let people going to or from Dundee rather than Leuchars.

The data is more restrictive than this. It only applies the easement to journeys between Dundee and one of a small number of stations in England (Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnmouth, Morpeth, Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, Northallerton, Thirsk, York, Leeds, Wakefield Westgate, Doncaster, Retford, Newark Northgate, Nottingham, Grantham, Peterborough and London Kings Cross), and it only applies if you use one of a list of LNER trains (which I think are all of the ones which go between Edinburgh and Dundee).

The data has Camelon (in Falkirk Group) and Dundee as applicable locations. nre.co.uk finds a few itineraries which are valid on a throuh ticket.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701450 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) and LNER TRAINS ONLY (00481) can travel via Doncaster. This Doubleback easement applies in both directions.

701455 (Map) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) and LNER TRAINS ONLY (00481) can travel via Doncaster. This Map easement applies in both directions.

701456 (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) and LNER TRAINS ONLY (00481) can travel via Doncaster. This Routeing Point easement applies in both directions.
This extends the easements to cover advance tickets between Retford and Newark North Gate.

In addition to the above, 701438 and 701446 have also been restricted to itineraries which use one of the same LNER trains as easement 701460. The text remains:

701438 (Routeing point) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh and connecting services via London Kings Cross between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This positive Routeing Point easement will override the Fares Check using NFM64 fares which would otherwise prevent journey planers showing this option. The easement applies in both directions.

701446 (Fare route) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh and connecting services via London Kings Cross between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This positive Fare route easement will override the Fares Check using NFM64 fares which would otherwise prevent journey planers showing this option. The easement applies in both directions.

I still have not found an itinerary which benefits from these easements.

As well as that, the "Warminster Salisbury" (00800) route code now specifies travel via both Warminster and Salisbury rather than just one of them. This means that (say) a "Warminster Salisbury" ticket between Woking and Castle Cary is no longer valid via Yeovil.

The following changes were published on Tuesday.
Changes from 05 Jan 2026 (628) to 06 Jan 2026 (629).

Easement changes:

Added:

701461 (Fare route) During engineering works on 1 March 2026, tickets routed VIA STAINES (00735) are valid via Weybridge. This Fare route easement applies in both directions.
No trains are going through Egham, Staines, Ashford or Feltham then, with trains between London and Reading being diverted via Weybridge and Chertsey.

This easement means that nre.co.uk lets you use a "via Staines" ticket from Norbiton to Virginia Water via Weybridge on that date. You normally need an "any permitted" one to go that way.

701462 (Fare route) Passengers travelling from Stratford-upon-Avon to West Brompton can travel via Birmingham Moor Street, Birmingham New Street and Watford Junction to West Brompton. This Routeing easement will apply in both directions.
This is another easement (to go with 701458 and 701459) which tries to help people with tickets between Stratford-upon-Avon and West Brompton. This one is intended to let you go via Birmingham and Watford Junction.

nre.co.uk doesn't show a through ticket as being valid on that route. With a fare route easement like this, it only lets you use routes which an "any permitted" ticket would permit. There are none of those as there are no through trains, it is much further than the shortest route, and none of the map combinations for journeys between Stratford and Willesden Junction allow travel via Birmingham.

701463 (Fare route) Journeys priced on routes (00267) VIA BANBURY, (00305) VIA HIGH WYCOMBE, (00362) VIA HIGH WYC&SHR, (00363) VIA HWYC & BHM, (00364) CH & TFW ONLY, (00402) AP HIGH WYCOMBE, (00432) AP H WYC & SHREW and (00435) AP CH AND TFW ONLY may travel via Aylesbury during engineering work closures on 17th and 18th January 2026, 14th and 15th March 2026, and 28th and 29th March 2026. This Fare route easement will apply in both directions.
There are no trains between London Marylebone and Gerrards Cross on those dates.

This lets nre.co.uk show an Oxford Parkway-London "via High Wycombe" as being valid with an itinerary via Aylesbury and Amersham, but not an Oxford-London one.

This may be because a fare route easement only allows routes which would be permitted with an "any permitted" ticket, and CI (the only map which includes the route through Amersham) isn't a valid map combination for tickets between Oxford and London.

The following change was published yesterday (on Wednesday).
Changes from 06 Jan 2026 (629) to 07 Jan 2026 (630).

There were no changes to the text of any easements. The data for easement 701460 has changed as it now includes Perth as an applicable location. This should have no effect on how retailers interpret the easement.

The text remains as described above.

The following post was made on 8th January 2026.

Two easements were added to the routeing guide this afternoon.
Changes from 07 Jan 2026 (630) to 08 Jan 2026 (631).

Easement changes:

Added:

701464 (Map) Due to emergency engineering works on the Hope Valley line on 8 to 10 January, Passengers travelling from North Lincolnshire, Newark, Doncaster and Sheffield to Manchester and Liverpool can travel via Leeds and Huddersfield. This map easement is applicable in both directions.
Northern have cancelled their trains between Sheffield and Hazel Grove or New Mills tonight from 6pm and all day tomorrow. Other operators are running, so this is of most concern to those who use smaller stations.

The data applies the easement to tickets between Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Oxford Road, Picadilly or Victoria or Stockport and Sheffield, Worksop, Retford, Gainsborough Lea Road or Central, Barnetby, Hambrough, Grimsby Town, Cleethorpes, Market Rasen, Lincoln, Sleaford, Newark Northgate or Castle, Grantham, Boston or Skegness.

It has Doncaster, Barnsley, Leeds, Huddersfield and Stalybridge as applicable locations. The only map combination for a journey between Sheffield and Manchester (as an example) is PR, and the only "applicable location" on the PR map is Barnsley. This may prevent it from being offered as an itinerary online.

701465 (Routeing Point) Due to emergency engineering works on the Hope Valley line on 8 to 10 January, Passengers travelling from Brigg and Kirton Lindsey to Manchester and Liverpool can travel via Leeds and Huddersfield. These journeys are denied because the NFM64 fares check reveals that tickets are more expensive from Barnetby to Manchester and Liverpool than from Brigg and Kirton Lindsey to Manchester and Liverpool. As a result, journeys via Barnetby are denied This positive Routeing Point easement will override the fares check and allow the journey. This easement will operate in both directions of travel.
This is similar, but for Brigg and Kirton Lindsey. The data permits Barnetby to be used as a routeing point for tickets between either station and Stockport, Manchester or Liverpool Lime Street (but not from Manchester Picadilly, only tickets to there).

This may not let retailers show the tickets as being valid via Leeds. These tickets are unaffected by the data for easement 701464, and the valid maps for travel between Barnetby and Stockport and Manchester (YL and DW respectively) don't include Leeds or Huddersfield at all.

The routeing guide was updated four times last week.

The following changes were published on Monday:
Changes from 08 Jan 2026 (631) to 12 Jan 2026 (632).

Easement changes:

Added:

701467 (Map) Passengers travelling from Streatham Hill, Gipsy Hill, West Norwood, Crystal Palace to Littlehampton on Tickets Routed AP SOUTHERN (07777) and NOT LONDON (00700) can travel via Norwood Junction. This map easement applies in both directions.
This seems to be a map easement to let a ticket be used in a way it could already be used.

nre.co.uk should calculate the shortest route between Streatham Hill and Littlehampton as being via Mitcham Junction, but the one via Norwood Junction is only slightly further, and is allowed. The shortest routes between Littlehampton and Gipsy Hill, West Norwood, and Crystal Palace are all via Norwood Junction.

The data doesn't mention Norwood Junction, but rather has Littlehampton and Three Bridges as applicable locations.

701468 (Doubleback) Journeys from Crawley to Dover Priory routed Not London (00700) can travel via Lewes and Eastbourne, this includes double back at Three Bridges. This easement applies in both directions.
This is, I think, intended to let you double back through Three Bridges to change in Gatwick.

nre.co.uk does not show a "not via London" ticket between Crawley and Dover as being valid via Eastbourne, but it doesn't show one between Three Bridges or Gatwick and Dover as being valid that way either. You would, I think, need a map easement or a new map combination before it can show itineraries via Eastbourne.

In addition, the data for easement 701460 has changed. The data no longer specifies a list of trains. So long as you use a ticket between Dundee and one of the English stations listed in the data, you should be able to obtain an itinerary. The text remains:

701460 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 17 January and 25 January journeys to and from Dundee via LNER, ScotRail and Cross Country can travel via Camelon (CMO). This map easement applies in both directions.

The following changes were published on Tuesday:
Changes from 12 Jan 2026 (632) to 13 Jan 2026 (633).

Easement changes:

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

000046 (Circuitous Route) Journeys from Cupar or Leuchars to Stirling or Glasgow are not permitted via Dundee. This prohibition applies in both directions.
This easement no longer affects journeys between Leuchars and Stirling or Glasgow. The journeys remain forbidden via Dundee for other reasons. The data remains unchanged.

In addition, the data for easement 701438 has changed. It no longer requires travel via London Kings Cross and now allows travel from or to there.

The easement applies in both directions.[/b]
I still haven't found a way to get an itinerary which goes via Dundee.

The following changes were published on Wednesday:
Changes from 13 Jan 2026 (633) to 14 Jan 2026 (634).

Easement changes:

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

030133 (Routeing Point) Customers from Insch, Huntly, Keith, and Elgin Elgin, Forres, Nairn, and Inverness Airport travelling to Aviemore and beyond may travel via Inverness. This easement applies in both directions.
These add three stations to the ones for which Inverness is a valid routeing point for journeys via Aviemore.

The only valid map combination between Inverness and Dundee (IP) doesn't allow travel via Aviemore, so a ticket between (say) Forres and Leuchars is unaffected.

This change does mean that nre.co.uk offers an itinerary via Aviemore and Nottingham on a ticket between Forres and Hucknall.

In addition, the data for easements 701438 and 701446 no longer tries to restrict you to specific LNER trains.

Easement 701446 (Fare route) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh and connecting services via London Kings Cross between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This positive Fare route easement will override the Fares Check using NFM64 fares which would otherwise prevent journey planers showing this option. The easement applies in both directions.

The following changes were published yesterday:
Changes from 14 Jan 2026 (634) to 16 Jan 2026 (635).

Easement changes:

Removed:

701417 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 4 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester to Edinburgh can travel via Doncaster. This map easement applies in both directions.

701418 (Map) During engineering work taking place 1 to 14 January 2026 Passengers travelling from Lancaster and Carnforth to Stations between Settle and Carlisle can travel via Skipton. This map easement applies in both directions.

701419 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 4 January 2026, Passengers with tickets routed via Lancaster can travel via Blackburn and Wigan. This map easement applies in both directions.

701422 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1to 4 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester to Edinburgh and Glasgow Central/Queen Street can travel via Sheffield and Doncaster. This routeing easement applies in both directions.

701423 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 4 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Preston to Edinburgh and Glasgow Central/Queen Street can travel via Manchester, Sheffield and Doncaster. This map easement applies in both directions.

701424 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1to 6 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Carlisle and Edinburgh can travel via Newcastle. This map easement applies in both directions.

701425 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Lancaster and Carlisle can travel via Skipton. This map easement applies in both directions.

701426 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Birmingham and Carlisle can travel via Leeds and Settle. This map easement applies in both directions.

701427 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Birmingham and Carlisle can travel via York and Newcastle. This map easement applies in both directions.

701431 (Fare route) During engineering works between 27 December 2025 and 1 January 2026 tickets routed AP Greater Anglia Only (00428) and Greater Anglia Only (00427) are valid on connecting Elizabeth Line Services at Stratford London to London Liverpool Street. This fare route easement will apply in both directions.

701436 (Doubleback) During engineering work taking place 1 to 14 January 2026 Passengers travelling from Lancaster and Carnforth to Stations between Settle and Carlisle can travel via Skipton. This double back easement applies in both directions.

701443 (Fare route) Passengers travelling from Crewe to Carlisle with tickets routed via Preston (00317) may travel via Blackburn between 01 and 04 January 2026. This easement applies in both directions.

701454 (Map) During engineering works between 27 December 2025 and 1 January 2026 tickets routed AP Greater Anglia Only (00428) and Greater Anglia Only (00427) are valid on connecting Elizabeth Line Services at Stratford London to London Liverpool Street. This Map easement will apply in both directions.

The dates for these easements have all passed.

There are still a few easements for which the end dates in the data have passed. The text for easements 701420, 701421 and 701442 specifies dates. The text for easements 701294, 701362, 701363 and 701364 doesn't.

Added:

701469 (Routeing Point) Due to engineering works between Yeovil Pen Mill and Dorchester West from the 28 February 2026 until the 08 March 2026, Passengers holding tickets routed via Castle Cary or Yeovil can travel on SWR via Salisbury and Southampton (but not via Basingstoke). This routeing point easement applies in both directions.
The line between Yeovil Pen Mill and Dorchester is closed then, so there are replacement buses (which don't go via Yeovil Junction).

The data means that Castle Cary, Salisbury or Southampton is a valid routeing point for a ticket used on an itinerary via Salisbury and Southampton Central which does not go via Basingstoke, so long as the titkcet has a "via Yeovil" (00829), "via Castle Cary" (00794), "via Salisbury" (00618) or "via Southampton" (00637) route code. It doesn't list "via Yeovil and Westbury" (00846) or "via Thornford and Honiton" (00626) tickets, although I haven't checked if there are any it would affect.

This easement means that nre.co.uk offers an itinerary for a ticket between Templecombe and Weymouth on those dates via Yeovil Junction, Salisbury and Southampton. The tickets all allow you to break your journey, so you can skip the double back to Yeovil without penalty.

Tickets between Sherborne and Weymouth don't benefit as they use the "any permitted" route.

Tickets between Chippenham and Weymouth don't benefit from any routeing point easements as both stations are themselves routeing points. This particular ticket would need a fare route easement (to remove the "via Yeovil" restriction and a map easement as, while the BW map includes most of the route, it has no link between Brockenhurst and Weymouth Group.
