Anyone know if London to Church Stretton would be valid via Crewe.?
I know it wasn't under British Rail, but has this now changed?

Depends on how you interpret easement 300443: "Customers travelling from Church Stretton to Crewe and beyond may travel via Shrewsbury. This easement applies in both directions." Is London beyond Crewe? On balance I think I'd say it is.

NRE doesn't have a problem with the route via Crewe, nor is it an issue for stations further south, such as Ludlow.

There was a problem a couple of years ago when an update omitted via Crewe in the maps but this was reinstated.
I usually go to Church Stretton from Euston via Crewe as it only involves 1 change instead of 2 via Birmingham (unless you are on the Shrewsbury direct service) and via Crewe is normally a quicker journey. it also helps with the xx:07 Liverpool train now calling at Crewe as it usually a same platform change at Crewe for the connection to Church stretton.

To ensure journey opportunities using South west trains services can take advantage of the promotion the following additional easements have been published

Easement added

700671: Between 14 October and 11 December 2016 customers with promotional fares, (ticket type EGH), routed (00127) SWTRAINS ONLY may travel on South West Trains services via Clapham Junction and Staines to Wokingham where the permitted routes do not include via Clapham Junction and Staines. This map easement applies in both directions​

Another South West Trains easement. This doesn't appear to me to add anything to easement 700669 (from last month), but it may appear different to some ticket sites.

When looking at this, I did start wondering if having an easement which allows you to use a route means that the route is permitted, and so that the easement doesn't apply. Then I stopped.

700672: Between 14 October and 11 December 2016 customers with promotional fares, (ticket type EGH), routed (00127) SWTRAINS ONLY may travel on South West Trains services via Guildford to destinations where the permitted routes do not include via Guildford. This fare route easement applies in both directions​

This one does add something, as it relates to Guildford rather than Clapham Junction.

Engineering works diversions Easement data changed

700654: Due to engineering works, on Sundays 21 August 2016, 4 and 18 September 2016, 2 October 2016, 16 and 23 October 2016 and 13 November 2016, Sleeper services between Penzance and London Paddington will be diverted via Honiton. To allow connecting services to be valid, this positive map easement will apply to the 21.15 Penzance departure Sleeper service and the 23.50 departure London Paddington sleeper service​

The text hasn't changed, however.

In addition to all this, GX+XP and GY+XP have been made valid routes from Carlisle to Preston.
This adds mapped routes via Settle and Clapham.

Addendum - a further update was published yesterday (before I sent the first part of this post), deleting GX+XP and GX+YP from the Carlisle-Preston map combination list.

On Thursday (10/11), the ST map gained a link between Seven Sisters and Tottenham Hale which avoids Clapton and Cheshunt.

An obvious way to do this would be using London Underground, raising the question of whether there would be an additional charge for this. The web page here indicates that single and return journeys which include validity between Tottenham Hale and "Zone U1 or beyond" were valid, but I haven't found anything which has been published to confirm what the current situation is with ticket acceptance.

The stations are only about a mile apart, so you could probably walk it, but there's no official connection time for that.

In any case, this affects the following routes. Some of these are routes to central London, Routes via London could already use this as part of a cross-London transfer.

None of the effects do much more than to enable travellers to go between Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters, as there were already other routes between them on the same map.

This means that there are mapped routes via London, rather than just ones via Reading and Leamington Spa. That said, bukitlawang.com states that RJIS gives the shortest route as being via London Victoria and the East Coast Mainline.

This comes about because journeys between Leatherhead and Newcastle do not have LONDON as a map combination (which would allow any mapped route to central London, followed by any mapped route to the destination, and is common for journeys where crossing central London might seem like a reasonable way to make a journey by rail). Journeys to Newcastle from Dorking, Guildford, Surbiton and Epsom do, however, as do journeys from Leatherhead to Carlisle, Darlington, Edinburgh and Middlesbrough.

This means that you can go from Leatherhead to Newcastle via Sutton, Thameslink and the ECML (Wimbledon is still only an option on the shortest route), but can't go that way from Effingham Junction (which doesn't have the extra maps).

An engineering easement was added for February.

700676 (Map) On the 04 and 05 February 2017, East Coast services are routed (without stopping) via Hitchin, Cambridge and Ely. To ensure journeys beyond Kings Cross are shown in Journey Planners, (where map permissions do not currently include links between Hitchin and Cambridge); this temporary map easement will operate in both directions.​

It doesn't indicate which routes are affected, although "beyond Kings Cross" suggests that journeys to London may not be covered.

No - London to Sheffield via Tamworth is a permitted route. I'm not sure how a Darlington to Lancaster Advance ticket can be anything other than a Darlington to Lancaster ticket though. If one were to split at Manchester it may cost more and would be two tickets rather than one.

There is a special case for those "LM AND XC ONLY" fares that "Via Tamworth" has been added as a secret, unpublished restriction to the electronic version of the route restrictions that booking engines use. This causes enough problems already with journeys such as Coleshill Parkway to London being forced to detour and doubleback via Tamworth in order to use the cheap LM AND XC ONLY fares. If "Via Manchester" were to be added as an unpublished restriction to all fares routed "TPE ONLY", whilst it would no doubt open up a number of interesting new anomalies, I suspect it would cause far more problems than it would solve!

Last Thursday a link was added to map ST between Seven Sisters and Tottenham Hale. What makes this a bit odd is that there is no NR line there. I suspect that it is supposed to represent the Victoria tube line, but don't think that this is documented anywhere.

One thing it does do is make fares such as Stansted Airport to Edmonton Green route ✠ANY PERMITTED actually useful for something. There are cheaper versions of these fares with no Maltese Cross which can be used on other reasonable routes. But taking the Victoria Line between TOM and SVS is actually quite a reasonable route for this journey, and makes use of the Maltese Cross, even if probably not in the way it was originally intended, judging by the price premium - apart from in the morning peak, a Travelcard is cheaper than a single.

I can see that the trains to Brentwood stop going to Shenfield (and are replaced by buses for that short section), but I haven't looked to see what effect this easement change has on journey planners.

It looks similar to what happened further north. Once it was permitted to travel from points south of York to stations on the Durham coast via Newcastle but that permission was removed some time ago. It was easily justified by the regular (TPE) service direct from Nothallerton to Eaglescliffe. I suspect a similar argument could be made for London to/from Leeds now that services run more frequently and also later. Given how many fares are based on clusters it also would not surprise me if a "loophole" fare exists that still allows the same flexibility. Just think of the local railway geography...

At times when trains are less frequent I've been offered it - I know someone who occasionally catches the 2200 from London to Leeds via York as they can't always get the direct 2130. This means the next train they can catch is the 2330.

I think it is accidental; ATOC have been caught on several occasions altering the routings of flows set by VTEC with no permission or knowledge of VTEC.

Some people at ATOC think they can do whatever they want, and sadly they are able to get away with it without any appropiriate sanctions as there is no effective regulator.

This easement is unusual for a "Routeing Point" easement, as it doesn't contain an explicit statement of what is being allowed by it.

Hackney Downs and Alexandra Palace are routeing points themselves (and so cannot be affected by this easement), and the other stations mentioned are variously associated with London, Hackney Downs and Seven Sisters on the one hand, and Finsbury Park, Alexandra Palace, Stevenage and routeing points beyond Stevenage on the other. I can only imagine that this easement ensures that some or all of these are valid.

If you have the old files available (or are able to obtain them), pdftotext and diff will get you a long way. The thing I use puts everything into an inconveniently large database at the same time, but the part which deals with that side of things could be separated out.
