National Rail Timetable

I was in WH Smiths the other day and noticed they still sold copies of the National Rail Timetable. It made me wonder if guards/conductors still carried a copy of this around with them, or if it has been replaced by something more modern with the advent of PDAs and the like?

I have a couple of old copies from back in the days when the internet was **** for that kind of thing I guess the map would still be quite handy to have.

What about TOCs like NXEC who don't generally use Advantix?

I was waiting for someone to say that . Presumably you have internet access, though, JsT, and that has everything on it. And it's not exactly pocket-sized for easy travel use.

For stations and professional use (or of course people with no internet access) it would still make sense of course.

I do but it can useful for bash planning purposes.

I imagine it would be very useful if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere on a bash and your plans get buggered up.

I wouldn't spend my money on one anyway.

Yes! Particularly if failed in Seven Tunnel/Standedge Tunnel/Totley Tunnel etc. I must admit I mainly use my mobile though for journey planning if possible when I'm out and about.

On a TOC without Advantix you're on your on!

Yeah, same, but then the mobile NRE isn't brilliant. You can't get it do go via places and stuff like that, which is annoying.

You cant beat the old timetable though for when technology buggers up..I always carry our WTT even on a day out with the family..can always try to scrounge a lift home!!

The O2 version seems ok. It doesn't do via, but is fast to load and will memorise you last 10 journey requests.

The NRT is no longer printed by ATOC or TSO (the printers used by ATOC) but is printed by a third party. Thus, TOCs are not given copies for stations (and I presume on-train staff) anymore. Ticket offices have access to the timetable information through their ticket issueing systems, which account for engineering work.

Becareful when using mobile services such as O2, some take the NRT as gospel, even on Sundays.

I've got a BR London Midland region one from 1973, bout an inch and a half thick and used to cost 20p. Now why do they want a tenner these days?

Bizarre, I was informed through Rail News Expres, which is issued by TSO, that they weren't producing one....Ah well you live and learn

This is simply a printed version of the online PDFs in the same form as the 'old' NRT.

These old editions were published/issued by Network Rail.

There is another version produced by Middleton Press, and updated monthly. This is about half the number of pages of the TSO version, as the pages are reduced in size to fit 2 per page side by side. Much more convenient for carrying around, but no good if you have poor eyesight!
