National rail through tickets from London

Can you buy national rail though tickets from a tfl operated station? Say from Barbican to Rayne's Park. What about with a railcard discount? Would it have to be from a manned ticket office rather than a machine?

Yes, although it would be a U1 London to Raynes Park (Barbican would not be named specifically and Raynes Park doesn't have an apostrophe)

Looks like you can't get a through paper ticket from a London Underground station to a National Rail station for a journey wholly within the Travelcard Zones (according to ticket booking sites and Avantix Traveller).

Even if you could, it would be an expensive ticket.

You are advised to use Oyster PAYG instead.

Single fare (with National Railcard) for the through journey
(Note that as this is a TfL+NR joint fare including Zone 1 it attracts a premium)
£4.90 Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930 and from 1600 to 1900.
£2.45 At all other times including public holidays.

Barbican to Vauxhall is a Zone 1 only fare (as Vauxhall is in Zones 1&2) at TfL rates, so £2 peak or £1.30 off peak.
Vauxhalll to Raynes Park is a National Rail fare from Zones 2-4 therefore it is only £2.40 peak or £1.20 off peak.
Therefore it can be cheaper to "split" however the only way to do this is to wait at Vauxhall for the OSI (out of station interchange) to time out! Therefore, not worth the hassle!

When using a trainline powered site, it gives me an option for a £4.25 with a railcard when travelling the evening peak. I started looking at fares like this when I discovered that on national rail only PAYG evening peak it was almost always cheaper to buy a single paper ticket with a discount instead!

Actually the oyster fare changing at Vauxhall or Elephant and Castle is only £4.40 peak or £1.45 off-peak (click on alternative fares on the tfl fare-finder) so the "split" is applied automatically.
