National Rail as a 'brand' was set up in 1999 but obviously privatisation occurred before this. What was the network collectively known as for the short time between privatisation in the mid-90s and the creation of the National Rail brand in 1999?
An archived Tube map from 1997 suggests they used the term 'National Railways', though the Tube maps in 1996 were still using 'British Rail'. However, the announcements on-board London Underground trains used "mainline services" or "mainline intercity/suburban rail services" to describe connections.
