One of the reasons that the ALX400’s are still around at Walsall is due to covering the Hydroliners. There have been many times this year where they made appearances on the X51 where the Hydroliners are allocated to.
Also, since NX West Mids have sold the Streetdecks to Arriva Merseyside, could the Hydroliners also be sold off to somewhere (providing that they are wanted by an operator due to their issues). It’s probably a more difficult task, however at least attempting to sell them would be a good move personally - the Streetdeck electroliners at Wolverhampton are going to create fleet movements, so diesel deckers could be moved from Wolverhampton to Walsall to replace the Hydroliners.
I’ve heard they might be planning on getting rid of their B5TL Gemini 2’s in the near future as well, so they are definitely aiming to standardise things more!
Pretty confident the Hydroliners are not owned by NXWM, or if they are, selling them wouldn’t be as simple as other buses, as the council have had such involvement in their procurement and operation. There’s a lot of misconceptions about these vehicles (not necessarily from your quoted post!), they’re only ‘unreliable’ because of the lack of hydrogen fuel, which is entirely out of the operators hands. When the hydrogen has been available they’ve settled down as perfectly good buses, and can be seen on all day 51 diagrams regularly of late, their regular route between Birmingham and Walsall owing to the ‘Sprint’ upgrades with additional, albeit minimal in my view, infrastructure along the route, again going back to the council’s involvement with them. As a local I’ve rarely seen these broken down and certainly not anymore so than diesel counterparts.
As for the Gemini 2 Hybrids, they’ve recently started having next stop equipment installed which indicates they are here to stay. Must admit I am quite surprised as other areas are phasing these vehicles out, NXWM themselves have really struggled keeping even half on the road at the worst periods, currently bustimes shows just 4 not used in the last month however which isn’t bad so they must have got on top maintenance lately!
Also staying put despite rumours are the Enviro Hybrids at Wolverhampton, where they are expected to remain to help increase capacity on local routes there, with Eclipse 2 single decks transferring out to remove more Scania Omnilinks, and the new Electroliners making up the rest of the double decker allocation at Wolverhampton.
The B5TL’s at least will be around for a bit yet, I’m sure it’s no news with the ALX400’s, B7TL Geminis and Scania Omnilinks leaving with the next fleet movements with the Electroliners arriving at Wolverhampton.
Looks like a few of the 61 plate E400’s have moved from Wolverhampton > Walsall to fill in for Tridents.
I expect there will be a major cull of the aforementioned types imminently, particularly with service levels now down for the holidays (re withdrawals this has frequently happened with NXWM over the last few years) and more Electroliners no doubt entering service in the new year. I for one will be sad to see them all go having grew up around them, but they’ve lasted well longer than expected. As for those 61 plate E400s, those will no doubt be Trident replacements, looks like most will be ran until MOT expiry or anything goes wrong that requires an expensive repair (Worth noting said E400s available to cascade from Wolverhampton were in fact new to Walsall for route 51).
