Some of the 130 StreetDeck Electroliners ordered by NXWM are now being delivered, with at least one (E1101, the start of the fleetnumber range) seen at Wolverhampton garage last month.

Was the order subsidised by West Midlands' share of the ZEBRA 1 pot?

Is the Inner Circle back to double deckers then? The WMB Foum has suggested NXWM will no longer be ordering single deck buses; indeed some routes in Coventry using single decks are apparently being transferred into Birmingham and the Black Country to eliminate older Scania single decks.

Major overhaul of West Midlands bus network to take next major step forward

"A major overhaul of the West Midlands' bus network is set to move a step closer with the purchase of depots across the region.

Members of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Board will meet next week to discuss bus depot acquisition and are expected to agree to move forward with the plan.

The costs of acquiring bus depots will be discussed in private but a report to the board said the business case showed a positive cost to benefit ratio for progressing the plan."

In other words, a large cheque to Mobico, the ownwers of NXWM.

Well if you're acquiring assets off anybody you'd expect to have to pay for them.

But several depots aren't owned by Mobico anyway anymore as they were sold off previously in sale and lease back deals so presumably there will be negotiations for the leases to be taken over. I can't see WMCA buying them back off private landlords.

Certainly Pensnett which is one of the depots mentioned is owned by LCP Properties as part of the Pensnett Estate and has always been leased along with other units on the Estate.Trading

WMCA already owns the Walsall depot in Carl Street. The other depots listed for purchase are:
  • Perry Barr depot in Aston Lane
  • Cox Street depot in Ford Street, Coventry
  • Wolverhampton depot in Park Lane
  • Pensnett depot in Second Avenue
  • West Bromwich depot in Oak Lane
  • Acocks Green depot in Fox Hollies Road
  • Birmingham Central depot in Liverpool Street
  • Yardley Wood depot in Yardley Wood Road
The Board report says Birmingham Central depot has a short-term lease life remaining and mitigation plans were in place, which could include building a new depot in east Birmingham.

(above information copied from a report in Halesowen News)

This is inevitable for Franchising to work. as TfWM could not allocate a franchise to say Stagecoach and expect them to have to go and find somewhere to keep their buses.

No, as I recall. I'm fairly sure these are announced as being funded by themselves.

The ZEBRA funding was recently amended and will presumably mean another order in time.

Yes, since October 2024 (see earlier in this thread) although still the occasional single decker but mostly double decker electric buses on the inner circle

Saw Gemini 4487 in Priory Queensway today probably on a 74. An 03 plate clinging on but probably not for much longer when the Electroliners start to displace the Enviros.

Seems most of the remaining ALX400 Tridents are now allocated to Walsall Depot and allocated regularly onto 6, 7 & 10 services.

Yeah, for the third time I understand:

Original allocation: 24 FCEV artics + 100 FCEV deckers
First variation: 24 FCEV artics changed to 24 BEV
Second variation: 100 FCEV deckers changed to 300 BEV
Third variation: 300 BEV deckers reduced to 130

Is the ZEBRA figure of 130 deckers purely a coincidence, then?

The only routes at CV that need single decks are the 20B and 24/25, It was said the 20B terminus can easily be changed & the 24/25 tenders will end at the end of the year. So NXC will be fully double deck.

There’s no way a Black Country depot would run routes into Coventry

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

There is a low bridge on Highgate Road - one that I believe the height restriction has been eased somewhat on, as it's now 14ft 3in, meaning the new EV deckers can fit under it, and as those are now the only double decks at Perry Barr, it means that double decks can feasibly operate the Inner Circle again.

In addition, between 2005 and 2021, the 8 was operated from Bordesley, which was restricted to single deck operations only due to a low ceiling in the depot.

I believe the route change that sent the 8 under that bridge occurred in 2004, so just before it passed from Hockley to Bordesley in 2005.
It has always gone under that Highgate Rd bridge as far as I know.
It was said the reason it was previously restricted was to stop buses taller than 14” 3’ being allocated in error 48XX Enviros & 47XX Omnicities.
I think the Enviros are 14” 6’

I also believe that the no. 8 Inner Circle bus has always gone under the Highgate Road Bridge. So the question now is how high is a Birmingham Standard bus which many of us remember on that route.

Papers for next week's WMCA Board meeting include updates on the current status of the CEBC and ZEBRA schemes (see Transport Operations).

Coventry (All-)Electric Bus City - scheme completion deadline extended to December 2026 with DfT agreement.

2.15 To support the region’s transition to a zero-emission bus fleet, reduce emissions and improve air quality, in 2020 the WMCA successfully bid for £50m from the Department for Transport to make Coventry the UK’s first all-electric bus city. The funding was secured to provide 75% of the cost difference between an electric bus and its diesel equivalent, plus supporting charging infrastructure, with partners contributing the rest; £73m from operators, £15m from WMCA and £5m from Warwickshire County Council (WCC), alongside committed investment from Coventry City Council in bus priority infrastructure. The terms of the grant funding required the project to be delivered in full by the end of 2025. This includes all services operating within the city boundary, plus all routes into Coventry from neighbouring areas. As of November 2025, 204 buses out of a total city fleet size of 269 are electric, representing almost 80% of the fleet. The residual diesel fleet includes 33 buses operated commercially by National Express, 17 operating TfWM contracts, 13 operating WCC contracts and 2 operating under contract to Homes England as a planning condition for the Ansty Park development.

2.16 TfWM is working with National Express to secure the infrastructure to enable the final 33 commercially operated electric buses to come into service during 2026, this includes securing a lease from Coventry City Council for the Cox Street Car Park which neighbours National Express’ Ford Street Depot as well as installing new power infrastructure and chargers on site.

2.17 WCC tendered contracts are planned to commence in January 2026. Due to the lead time in acquiring buses and infrastructure these will initially be operated by diesel buses, and then operated with electric buses by July 2026 on all of these services.

2.18 TfWM is currently undertaking a procurement process for its own tendered services, which again, due to lead times acquiring buses and infrastructure, will also be initially operated with diesel vehicles. It is the intention that these contracts will be awarded in December 2025 and come into operation in July 2026. Tendering operators are required to stipulate the date by which they will be able to implement electric buses, but it is required that the full operational fleet will be electric within 12 months of award, so will be fully electric by December 2026.

[...]

2.22 The extension to the delivery of the overall programme are primarily a result of the substantial economic shocks that have occurred since funding was awarded and the uncertainty this has injected into the market causing delays in finalising the project scope. When funding was awarded, patronage had been severely impacted by the Covid pandemic and the extent to which services would recover was unclear. This was followed by significant inflation, which averaged 6.3% p.a in the UK between 2021-2024, compared to 1.7% p.a in 2017-2020. As a result, there were uncertainties around the future scale of the commercial network and neither TfWM or WCC were in a position to award long-term contracts for services given the uncertainty over long-term patronage and the funding available for network support

2.23 TfWM has kept DfT abreast of the programme change. The DfT are supportive and have clarified that the project extension is within the delegated powers of WMCA as a devolved funding package. DfT and WMCA have gained a lot of valuable learning form this city-wide project which is being used to inform and assist in a greater understanding of infrastructure requirements and implications for other large-scale projects.

Zero Emission Bus Regional Area - after NXWM decided they didn't want hydrogen buses, TfWM proposed the majority of grant funds be used on 300 electric deckers NXWM already committed, or would commit to acquire with their own funds. DfT decided the 130 StreetDeck Electroliners (delivery underway) would be ZEBRA-eligible; the preceding 170 BYD-chassis E400EVs (all entered into service) would not be and that portion of the grant has been returned. Grant agreement for the Electroliners is being drafted and a separate business case for the 24 electric artics (still included in ZEBRA grant) is proposed for Board approval in Q1 2026.

2.24 In June 2022, WMCA Board approved the receipt of £30.4m funds from DfT as part of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Area fund (ZEBRA). This was secured by the WMCA following a competitive bidding process to part-fund 100 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Double Decker buses and 24 articulated hydrogen buses for the Sprint rapid transit scheme, plus fuelling infrastructure. This scheme, proposed by National Express, was set to be the largest hydrogen bus deployment in the world outside of China, and the significant risks associated with this scheme were highlighted in the Board report, along with proposed mitigations. During 2023 National Express themselves highlighted the significant risks and following a change in their management structure they formally advised in February 2024 of their withdrawal from the project.

2.25 Following discussions with the DfT and in order to retain the grant, TfWM prepared an alternative proposal to repurpose the funding to support 300 electric double deck and 24 electric Sprint vehicles. 170 of these buses had already been committed to by National Express and it was intended that by utilising grant funding to support these buses they would be brought into scope of a future funding agreement between National Express and WMCA. However, after considering the change request in detail, the DfT did not authorise grant to be used for these vehicles. Instead, approval was given to provide 130 double deck vehicles and 24 sprint buses with £13.2m of grant to be repaid (the proportion intended to support National Express with the 170 buses) – so these buses were instead provided by National Express without use of grant. The WMCA were not given any other opportunity to repurpose the £13.2m in funding and have also managed to fulfil the overall objectives of the scheme for 300 additional buses into the network without this funding.

2.26 The WMCA is now developing a grant agreement to enable £10.04m to be utilised to support the 130 new electric buses to be delivered in 2025/26 and to be deployed across the Black Country, Birmingham and Solihull. A business case is being developed in relation to acquisition of the Sprint vehicles. This will utilise the remaining allocation of ZEBRA funding and will be presented to WMCA Board in the first quarter of 2026. This will set out a wider strategic approach to fleet, which map the plan to deliver a fully zero emission fleet across the whole region over the coming years, and the delivery timescales and proposed operating model for the Sprint buses.

Thanks for the posts Edvid.
Had wondered about the progress on the A34 routes. I did see a couple of Hydroliners out on two days about a month ago.

I see TfWM continue to lay the blame for the 2 year delay on electrifying Coventry on everything but their own incompetence.

They started operator engagement for tenders two years ago, but somehow never managed to issue any tenders.

The talks to secure the lease on Cox Street Car Park from Coventry City Council have also been going on this long.

Warwickshire CC got so hacked off with TfWM that they took the tendering of cross boundary services back.

This Times article mentions that Mobico have put National Express West Midlands up for sale - or rather “plan to monetise its assets” - given franchising is just round the corner that just sounds like a fancy way of flogging the buses and depots to the Combined Authority!

www.thetimes.com/article/7d5f598c-5f0b-4d1c-9551-9de88566147b?shareToken=93523116d94b2a675213daf27e42194d

It’s behind a paywall so I’ll quote it:
Revenue-shredding competition in the UK intercity coach market amid a price war being waged by FlixBus has prompted Mobico, the parent of National Express, to downgrade profit forecasts and cut jobs.

In further developments at the group, the National Express coach company’s sister business running buses in the West Midlands has been put up for sale, and Mobico has delayed the end of its financial reporting year to March from the end of December.

The latter move, just five weeks before what would have been the end of its reporting period, indicates the depth of the financial crisis at the company following the resignation of its auditor Deloitte. The accountant quit earlier this year over its concerns of “significant weaknesses in internal control” within the group.

Mobico has appointed a new auditor, KPMG, but said it had shifted its accounting dates “to allow the company sufficient time to prepare the financial statements and for KPMG to have sufficient time to complete the audit”.

The continued run of bad news from the one-time constituent of the FTSE 100 left its shares marooned around all-time lows, trading on Wednesday afternoon at 22p, up ¼p, or 1.4 per cent, and valuing the group at £130 million, significantly less than its expected annual operating profits.

In a statement covering the trading quarter to the end of September, the group said underlying annual operating profits were expected to come in at the lower end of the previously guided range of between £180 million and £195 million.

As a result, it said, the business was now on a “large scale cost reduction programme”.

Following its withdrawal from the UK railways — it was once Britain’s largest train operator — and more recently a hugely loss-making exit from running school buses in the US, Mobico, despite being still listed in London, is primarily a Spanish coach operation.

That business, Alsa, which accounts for all of Mobico’s profits, is still performing strongly. with revenues up 4 per cent in the quarter.

Not so at its UK operations, where National Express’s decades-long all-but-monopoly on the country’s intercity coach networks has been shattered by the entry into the UK during the pandemic of FlixBus, a German start-up.

National Express reported a 7.4 per cent decline in revenues as a result of “increased competition on key routes which reduced passenger yields.”

The company has been paring back its nationwide footprint and disposed of associated coach businesses like Clarkes of London, The Kings Ferry, based in the capital and in Kent, Lucketts in Hampshire and Dorset, and Worthing Coaches of West Sussex.

The group has been running the buses in the West Midlands since privatisation nearly 40 years ago. However, its dominance in the region is at an end after the West Midlands mayor decided to move to local franchised operators from 2027.

After months of speculation over what Mobico’s response might be, the company said it was now “exploring options to monetise the assets of the business.”

The company has been without a chief executive for six months with no news on a new appointment. It is being led by Phil White, executive chairman, who rejoined the company in the spring 20 years after he retired as its chief executive.

“We continue to focus on simplifying and strengthening the group, taking decisive actions to improve operational and financial performance,” White said.

“The key priorities remain strengthening the group’s balance sheet [it is more than £1 billion in debt] and improving profitability through our strategic initiatives.”

That will certainly cause some fleet movements with their introduction. It will mean the final moments for the Tridents is nearing sadly. I think it will be touch and go to see if they are still in use by the new year, I note just 11 left and 4611 hasn’t tracked in a couple of weeks.

I hope that there is some info given on when their last day of operation will be - given that it’s a huge end of an era! The same can be said for the Geminis…

Indeed. I did see a red and white Gemini last week which i presume was one of the WB fleet on a No 5 around Queslett, and we still have a couple of red and white Tridents at Walsall which I often see in Brownhills or Rushall.

I've never really been interested in the Tridents, but I've always had a soft-spot for the Geminis, it's sad to know the end is near, though given they've been in daily service for 20 years+, they've clearly solid buses!

The red and white Gemini could have been 4523, I feel as though it’s become a standout being the last of the batch and the last red/white at WB.

The Tridents have been dropping down in numbers a lot in the last couple of weeks, I think there’s just two red and white left. 4590/99. 4595 also looks like it broke down on the 6 according to the tracker, so depending on the problem it very much could be the last of that one unfortunately.

The main reason for my interest is due to seeing more of the Tridents than the Geminis, particularly when they made appearances on the 10A when it went to Lichfield. I would’ve liked to have seen more Geminis on there too but that’s going back a few years now.

The Geminis have definitely held up better in recent times, all the 03 plates at WB and AG are out today which is quite the achievement with them getting on for 23 years! Credit to the mechanics for maintaining them so well!

They must be one of the last big operators to use B7 Geminis in daily service, even First have phased most out, haven't they?

I think the NX B7’s are indeed the largest batch still used in public service. First withdrew all theirs earlier this year although I think NX had a bigger batch of B7 Geminis anyway, there wasn’t an awful lot with First by the beginning of this year.

From memory, there was still some in Colchester late last year, so presume these have now gone.

Thanks for the correction. Thought it had gone in the spring 8-)
No worries, I had forgotten about that one myself until it was announced withdrawn, It appears to have been the last one standing at Essex for a while!

There are some ex Go Ahead North ex Go Ahead South Geminis currently on loan to Metrobus in Crawley to cover for temporarily withdrawn hydrogen buses.
The Hydrogen buses are proving to be less reliable compared to the diesel or electric choice. The NX West Mids examples have been out on the road more recently but have had difficulties with keeping them out in service. From what I’ve heard, fuelling them up is an issue for them with Hydrogen fuel not always available.
