National Express free amandments when using a free ticket?

I've been given a code by National Express for a free return journey to anywhere on their network following a delay. Does anyone know how this would work in terms of being able to change the return date for free and if they'd charge any difference in fare in this case? They say they're offering a free amandment, no £5 free, until 31 October due to COVID-19. Can this be done after the outward journey but before the return leg?
