Are things like Red Nose day, Sport Relief etc a good thing?

Having worked overseas at the coal face for small charities, I see that's where the money's needed......

I struggle with 'stars' who earn millions telling US to donate a fiver...

Well, we have done our bit today, as my good lady wife and I financially supported the efforts of some elderly ladies in their sale of of home-made produce in our local area.

We take no heed of "celebrities" exhorting us to do anything, as we are well enough aware of matters as not being needed to be treated like children and "being told what to do". There has been enough television time spent in informing the public at large that Friday was the day when all events would be held.

I despise the time creep that such events have (not all are charities, Christmas is by far and away the worst offender) - Red Nose Day seemed like Red Nose Month. It rings hollow when people who earn millions and are getting us to donate when it is the former that doing better than the Charity in question through exposure.

I only donate where either there is full transparency about how much goes to the beneficiaries or where it would significantly damage my standing/reputation if I did not donate. I know the latter is cynical (can anyone think of a better word?) but £1 is cheap to maintain my standing at work.

Like Mr and Mrs Sidorczuk [I assume that's who's meant by "we", apologies if not], I take no heed of "celebrities" exhorting me to do anything and being treated like a child is the fastest way to ensure my wallet stays in my pocket
