And with Lancashire County Council focused on Skelmersdale, there's no chance of the Curves being reinstated in the medium or long term.

This maybe of interest, I found this statement in the Lancs County Council website under the West Lancs highways and transport masterplan

"Investigate options and prepare a business case for electrification of the Liverpool, Ormskirk to Preston railway line to fulfil its potential as a commuter route. Which would include the reinstatement of the Burscough Curves railway line"

The closures of the mid to late 60s and beyond are particularly resented by many.
The closure of Grimsby to Spalding in 1970 was very short-sighted as was March to Spalding in the 80s. Today these lines would be useful.
Hull to York via Pocklington would have created a commuter railway for York and a new line today would generate new traffic.
Colne to Skipton
Leeds to Wetherby
Leeds to Otley

Only one from me, which I cannot believe has not been mentioned before:

Malvern Wells - Tewkesbury - Ashchurch - Evesham - Bidford-on-Avon - Stratford Old Town - Kineton - Byfield - Towcester - Blisworth* - Northampton Bridge Street - Wellingborough London Road - Oundle - Wansford - Stamford East - Essendine* - Bourne - Sutton Bridge - South Lynn - Melton Constable - Potter Heigham - Caister-on-Sea

* New bridge crossing at WCML & ECML.

A vitally important route for future Malvern to Caister Spring Bank Holiday traffic!
Great stuff, but you forgot to specify whether you'd need to reverse at Ashchurch, or are you going for the full set with the reinstatement of a flat crossing over the Bristol - Birmingham main line? :D

I can't remember the rules - do they have to be practical? If not, then the G&SW route to Castle Douglas and then the Port Patrick & Wigtownshire route to Stranraer. The business case is a complete non-starter, but the scenery would be amazing.
