Good evening,

I've done this before with a mystery photo on here with a successful result.

Hopefully someone recognises the location on the attached photo?

Some thoughts/notes:

It was a slide taken (badly!) in 1991, the slides before were at home (Teeside) in heavy snow and the photo's after were taken at Eastfield depot (with light snow on the ground).

Looking at the photo there is snow in the shadow of the platform - could this mean it is in the shadow of the morning sun so the train is heading north (ish)?

I've noticed the blue sign above the station name sign but have not found anything similar on google?

I'm wondering if this is somewhere on the northern section of the ECML? Maybe we stopped off on the way to Ednburgh/Glasgow to see class 26's on coal trains up there somewhere?

Anyway, have fun!

Cheers,

Chris

PS - sorry if this should be in a different section of the forum.

It's definitely a ScotRail station South of Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line - either Prestonpans or Wallyford, I would say. probably the latter, judging by the rather new-looking platform.

EDIT: I've just discovered that Wallyford station didn't open until 1994....so if you were watching/photographing MGR trains it would have been Prestonpans.

The light blue sign I'm pretty sure is BR era Scotrail. After putting your picture into an image editor and zooming in it would appear the first letter of the station is "M". Given the OHLE and HST in the shot it would seem highly likely this is Musselburgh.

ETA Further detective work using Streetview suggests this is indeed Musselburgh. The photo is taken from the Edinburgh end of the down platform looking west so the HST is working an up service. The position of the the OHLE stanchion with adjacent platform end warning signs and nearby lamp post carrying the station nameboard pretty much clinch the identification. Musselburgh would have been a reasonable place to see coal trains serving Cockenzie Power Station.

Not having the benefit of a picture editor here in Italy, having seen the evidence, I would now agree. ;)

Thanks for the above, it always amazes me the knowledge available on this forum.

I now have the locations for the 24 slides I took in 1991. They were an experiment on an old camera, which mostly seem to have been taken badly!!

It's interesting the locations I got to as a 16 year old:

Musselburgh, Eastfield & Carlisle on a day trip with friends.
Gloucester, Eastleigh, Westbury, Newport, Reading on day trips out whilst on a family holiday in the cotswolds. I remember being dropped/collected at Evesham for these days out. Probably gave my parents a peaceful day!
Finally a stop at Leicester on the way north from the holiday to see new class 60's at Brush works.

Cheers,

Chris

Another shout out for Musselburgh - view looking north west on Wikipedia commons, train in original photo is an up train just passing the platform end, the line is oriented NW-SE here so sun would have been from the south.

Please compare the red warning sign at the up platform end, right next to the OHLE mast?
