Recently travelled Paddington to Penzance, shortly after Reading, we were told we had to return to Reading because of signalling problems, a few minutes after moving backwards, we were told all was now well and we would be continuing to Taunton, however, we still proceeded backwards and continued that way for the rest of the journey. Clearly the train was turned around somewhere, is there a loop west of Reading we were put on?

Did you reverse back into reading station? Do you know if went via bristol? You may have gone round the reading west curve between reading west station and the gwml.

No didn't reverse as far as Reading station, remember after 'all ok' announcement passing Reading West and later Hungerford, so were clearly back on track.

I would imagine you went to Reading West Junction (on the Bristol line), then reverse back to Reading West via the Reading West Curve, as matt said.

Could have been a defect from the front power car that caused it.

Hope that Helps :)

Thanks for all that, just curious. Surprising how many passengers continued to believe that we were still returning to Reading, over half hour after original announcement, although position of the sun clearly indicated that we had turned around.

If the train was wrong routed it would have been easier to send train via Melksham than what actually happened. Unless it was booked to call at Newbury & Pewsey.
