Mystery Freight

Anyone from the Glasgow area know what the freight working is that goes along the Glasgow/Newton line round about midnight on a Saturday. I can hear it and always plan to head to my local station at Kingspark to see what it is but by the time the next Saturday arrives I've forgotten until I hear it again!

It'll most likely be a engineering train from mossend dumping rails, sleepers or ballast in the newton area, usually hauled by a DBS class 66.

Pardon my ignorance but what exactly does 6K03 mean? I assume it's the code for the working but grateful for some clarity! Cheers!

It's the train ID. The first digit is the train type. The letter is a destination indicator, and the last two digits are like a serial number.

Going to try and remember this Saturday and take the dog out a little later than usual to try and catch this!

Well the dog and I remembered this week and headed off to the station and got there just about midnight to see the top and tailed working. DBS 66111 (still in EWS colours) pulling a rake of wagons with what looked like the chips you would lay on your drive or garden! I didn't catch the number of the 66 at the rear! Glad I've finally put an image to the sound!

They do use smaller ballast for packing in the sleepers IIRC... Been a long time since I was on the tracks mind..
