My Worst Train trip

August 1995 - Great Yarmouth to Wolverhampton.

Started with a summer saturday direct Yarmouth to New Street train, booked for 4 car 158.

Only a single unit turned up, quite a large quantity of people got left behind and it was anarchy.

Then got to Nuneaton rather late and went no further - New Street station had helpfully caught fire.

Was not a pleasant journey.

Well last I checked someone was still sore at losing the NWM Challenge. Oh wait - that's me I even had a 39 lined up...!

The most obvious "bad trip" I had was actually quite enjoyable, which is why I am yet to list it. So here goes. In March last year I went to Ormskirk for a Uni interview at Edge Hill. I stayed in Southport [unaware that my enemies were omnipresent there... I refer to Arriva, of course!] on, ironically, Bath Street. Anyway, going to Souhtport I used a Liverpool Pendo, so I figured that I'd return via Preston (and use the X2 bus). I reached Preston literally three minutes before my train was due, because I missed the X2 (...), and sure enough a Pendo was awaiting departure. Except that it was Glasgow-bound, not London-bound. Instead, all Euston services were cancelled - there had been a signal fire to the north. Trains were running single-file into one platform, with priority going to local services (Blackpool, Blackburn, Ormskirk and Liverpool), before everything was suspended. I was diverted to Piccadilly as a result, having never been to Manchester in my life before that day. In going there, I managed to get one over my brother (avid United fan, unlike me [Everton, but even then not seriously]). I finally used the 1515 to Euston, finally reaching Euston at 17xx. By the time I reached Thorpe Bay, I was 191 minutes (3h 11m) late. So I put in a complaint, and received £39 in travel vouchers. Nice. Especially when you consider that the Government paid for the trip!

Well 7 days after I complained I got a response,

We did have a problem with cleaning our trains in the recent bad weather, but this should have been resolved. I would therefore like to apologise for the shortfall on this occasion.



I have traced the carriage details and passed them to Marc Silverwood, who is our Trains Presentation Manager, and Gary Tremble, District Maintenance Manager, so that they can investigate and address the issues that you have highlighted. Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention.

My worst journey was from Edinburgh to South Wale son the day that Diana died in 1997. The train ran 2 coaches short of the usual 7, and by Sheffield people were sitting on the armrest of my seat in first class. At Birmingham, the conductor refused to start the train until some people got off, as it was impossible to close the doors! It was hot, sweaty, impossible to get a drink and full of people crying about Diana. After 10 hours I went straight to the pub when i got off, and downed a pint in about 30 seconds!

Worst I had was a couple of months ago when the snow made the trains go all screwy! Was on a very busy 318 thundering towards Glasgow Central Low Level, and was standing in the most packed train I've ever been on. So packed that we were litterly jammed up against one another (me agaisnt the wall!).
But that's not the worst thing. there was this guy who was holding on to one of the rails of the luggage racks and his elbow was hovering inches from my face. He actualled smaked a poor guy with it a couple of times. When he nearly hut me, I asked him if he could place his arm somewhere else (there was on top of the seat behind him), but he refused. Coldy. No appology or nothing to the guy he smacked either.
