My train trip: A success!

The railway industry gets a bashing here sometimes, and occasionally deserves it.

However - this weekend I had a train trip that ran smoothly throughout - trains fast, on time and uncrowded. And cheap - £30 for a return trip of over 200 miles.

I also had to buy a ticket for a local journey on Saturday morning. The ticket office was closed, and the guard didn't have time to sell tickets on the 3 minute journey - so I bought at the destination. No problem! No accusations of criminal intent nor any penalty fare.

Credit where credit is due so thanks to Virgin Trains, Northern Rail, TPE and London Midland for a job well done.

Great to hear that. Few good experiences get reported, but it's human nature to focus on the bad ones I suppose. Are you a frequent rail traveller?

Yes indeed. Every working day for more than 20 years until recent retirement.

As someone who has "endured" the diversion up the East Coast from Kings Cross to Edinburgh yesterday, and the shuttle service on the West Coast today, getting the first train from Edinburgh in the morning to connect from one to the other, I think my journey has been pretty successful! Punctual trains, friendly staff, clean trains... I just have half an hour till I get back to London for nothing to go wrong
