Can anyone tell me of the relevance/meaning of this oft-heard bashers' saying?

Apologies if this is an ignorant question...

Thanks for the pointers :)

It originates back in the 1970s. A phrase used by a couple of Western bashers that stuck for a little while.

Bizarre, I was thinking the same question, moments ago. Nowt on Wikipedia or Google. It wasn't something I recollect hearing, back in the 80's and the early 90's, in my railtouring days.

YouTube evidence suggests it gets shouted a) on diesel tours; b) from the leading coaches; c) nanoseconds after the driver's notched up and clag is emanating from every orifice of the loco in charge.

Feels to me that it's the modern equivalent of arm-flailing (oh how I miss those wanton days, when every tour meant possible limb-removal, from a passing train or lineside structure!).

Its not what they bellow that annoys me its their attitude and the fact they think anyone not them or one of their mates is a stoat

a few "bashers" are ok and you can get on with them well, others arnt, these tend to have the attutude of "if you wernt around/never did it when it was doing regular working you arnt and never will be a basher, you`ll always be a veg"

ive got one too add to that

PresVEG-"Bashers" who do all their haulage on preserved lines

because i see these so called "top men" at galas but hardly caneing in the mainline miles, bit hypacritical really isnt it

No. Its called a choice of what you want to do.

Hows it hypocritical, there is more to bashing than mileage.

However claiming something is totally hell and you now 'bash' them after you've had one single trip (pres or mainline) just makes you look silly.

Nah I meant about the ones who go one about only doing mainline stuff when it was regular, its a joke I dont care what people do, everyone enjoys the hobby differently I do both mainline and pres

Then I;m confused to whom you are referring, and are so bothered about what other people talk about.

No offense taken at all, I do get bemused by some of the 'basher' threads though, everyone seems at odds with what I've experienced.

The 'attitude' is as much to do with you act. If somebody runs up and down the front coach shouting, getting excited each time the loco blows its horn and acting like an idiot or, for example, wearing a stupid hat or some other veggish behaviour, then they are hardly going to be welcomed by the front coach brigade who have been out and about for X years. From what I've seen, there are people who are newish to the hobby who are respected, but respect is something that has to be earnt.

yup, I wasnt really talking about personal experience as ive been welcomed and respected by quite a few people, never et anyone who wears anything odd or runs up and down shouting but I can see your point there
